Where's Waldo? And, who the hell is "ウォーリー"/Wally?

As you will be aware from the wiki link, Wally is the original name, and used even though Wally has a slang meaning. I always wondered why he had to be Waldo for the North American (excluding Mexico, I presume) market.

As far as I can figure as an American, "Waldo" is much funnier (and rarer) than "Wally." Maybe to a person in the UK, "Wally" is an absurd, funny name because that that's the feeling I get from "Waldo."

Then again, the title change could just be marketing horseshit like the title "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (UK) vs "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (USA) (Wiki).

Yeah, Waldo sounds more like a sesame street character name than Wally...and then with the slang...maybe Waldo really was a better choice for NA. (then again, we have movie titles like "Free Willy")

I fully understand the reasoning behind Merkins struggling to come to terms with a philosopher and willingly accepting a sorcerer.
