Living in Tokyo

Postby stuckinkysuhu » Tue Oct 28, 2003 11:49 pm

I have a question for you guys. I am a university student out in Oita prefecture. Hold the laughs. Anway, I have to write the LSATs over in Tokyo in February. I was thinking I might as well escape Oita for an extended period of time and stay in Tokyo for all of February and March (months I have no school in).

Can anyone suggest a way for me to survive?

What would be the cheapest place to stay? Gaijin houses? Any recommended ones?

Are there any good jobs for gaijin in the 2 month time frame. I have a visa that lets me work 8 hours a day during school vacations. If I tried to work the late shift at a convenience store or something would I get hired? Any other job suggestions? Basically I just want enough money to pay my rent and maybe a bit more. I have plenty of money in the bank, but don't want to blow it all - hence the job requirement. I am a native English speaker but have never taught English before and dunno if I could get hired for that short of a time period.

By the way I am white which might count against me I dunno. Also I have 1-kyu Japanese. Any suggestions are welcome. Help a guy trying to escape from inaka for a while!! haha.

thanks.

I think with 1-kyu Japanese, you have a fair shot at working for a conbini. I knew a Bangladeshi guy who managed my local AM-PM in Tokyo. If you think being white counts against you, being from another Asian country is an even worse stigma in Japan. Yet this Bangledeshi dude was ordering the J-clerks around and was respected. Give it a shot, why not?

Also, where do they administer the LSATs in Tokyo?

Thanks for the advice. I think I will give it a shot. I mean, given how many conbinis there are, you've got to think at least one will have an open minded tencho who will gimme a shot. hahah.

As for the LSATs - they are administered at Temple University. You can sign up online for the test at http://www.lsac.org

Since it seems you've got your heart set on a conbini job, I direct your attention to these two past topics, both of which may be helpful in deciding which chain to work for:

Vote for your favorite "conbini"

Vote for best "Pornbini"
