The police tend to use any charge they can to detain someone as quickly as possible. When they picked him she may not have been declared dead yet or the information might not have trickled down to the arresting officers. Once they had him in custody it wasn't as urgent so they could take their time to look at the evidence and decide whether not to charge him with something else. I haven't been paying very close attention to this case or the timeline of events so I'm not saying that's the case. However, it's very typical of the way police operate.
