Mac Pro with All-New Trash Can Styling

Postby Yokohammer » Tue Oct 29, 2013 1:59 pm

It's up on the Mac Store already! Won't be available until December though.

So who is going to fork out JPY 318,800 for the 4-core model, or 418,800 for the 6-core model?

(Hint: probably not me ... although I've learnt to never say "never.")

Nope...
i can't even tell what proc is on my IMac.
The days of upgrading a Mac to switch from 25mhz to 33mhz and have the world turned over are long gone...
Not even the pitifull firefox would need/justify more power...

Not me. I'm (still) a fan of Apple laptops (best no-hassle portable UNIX devices in existence), but don't see the point (for my purposes) of having one as a desktop, especially if it's non-expandable.

I hear ya on the lack of expandability. That seems to be the deal breaker for quite a few people.

But being the type of guy who likes lots of screen real estate (constantly referring to multiple documents when writing, need gobs of space for audio/video stuff too) I like having a "desktop" with an external display or two. I worked with a laptop connected to an external monitor for a while, but the damn laptop just hogged so much desk space it became a problem.

So currently I'm using a Mac Mini (latest model -- 2.3 GHz Core i7) that I've stuffed with 16 GB of RAM, and that little thing sits unobtrusively and quietly out of the way while doing everything I need without even breaking a sweat.

The only reason I'd be tempted to go for a Mac Pro would be a heavy, extended video editing and processing workload. Don't see that happening anytime soon though, so nope. For now.

For the screen real estate (mainly programming use) I also have a desktop [*], just not a Mac. Self-built, of course, so infinitely expandable. It does have a stylish aluminium case mind. I do have a nifty little stand for the MacBook and used to position it next to one of the monitors so I could use it if needed.

[*] why do we still call them desktops BTW?

Beats me.

Although my little Mac Mini is actually on my desk, sort of behind the monitor where it's out of the way.

I've thought about getting one but probably won't right away. I have a friend that works at Apple and he says I can have his 25% off coupon which makes it tempting. But I just got a new Macbook Pro which is more than powerful enough for me so I really don't have much reason. Only thing I would really need that much power for is photo and video editing which I do a lot of but not for professional reasons or anything like that, just for fun.

Separate lineups. Should not have linked price variations...

I have long given any hope of computers not being a total PITA. And this is me speaking as a total non-Windows user. I spread the pain between OS X and Linux (from whence I am posting right now).

If only it behaved like Unix, it would be awesome. As such, it's just really good. The performance jump in my 2007 model to current was very apparent. :)

It is easy to be blinded to the essential uselessness of computers by the sense of accomplishment you get from getting them to work at all.
