In Japan, no escape from The Eye’s perpetual policing glare

Hey, all you residents heading abroad for the holidays, here’s a little experiment to try on yourself: When you return to Japan, take note of an interesting phenomenon that starts just as you deplane and plug back into Japanese society.

You’ll feel a palpable and intractable pressure — a pressure to conform to The Order, that standardized way of doing things in Japan. You can use it to get what you want, or you can defy it and feel the burn of its stare.

I call this pressure The Eye.

Reading that, I can't help but recall another JT columnist, although lately I believe his submissions have not been passing the final muster.

Not that I really care about the evil eye (Kinda immune after so many years with the wife) but the last time I left j-land I was asked for my finger print upon reentry. What's that all about? I recall that was some 4 years ago so no idea if its still going on.

That is just copying the US, and it is still going on. You are photographed as well. I still don't understand what use the photograph is when they have an Immigration Officer looking at you and at your passport photo as well. But then, the US do it too so they just copy them.

They don't copy the sour mood of the US Immigration Officers, but I will give the US points for being equally sour to their own citizens.

The do many things that are pointless, like asking a citizen why they're coming to America... In my case it was for a funeral and despite me saying "good morning sir" and being dressed in a black suit and black tie, he still had more questions for me.

That is why I always try to go to a Black or Latino Migra Officer. Never go to the female occifer... They have too much to prove and drill you. Note this is only a good idea for non whites. I have heard that blacks going to a black occifer is also a bad idea.

Really depends on the person. 9 times out of 10 I'm greeted with "good morning" and "welcome home" but there's always those occasional assholes or the guy that just dealt with a large group of tourists from [insert cuntry here] that no speakah Eigo, and either have no passport, no visa, or gave some really ayashii explanation for why they came to the U.S.

...but as you say, they are pretty equal in dishing out the assholeness to everyone, regardless of citizenship.

All of this writing about perceived pressure really sounds like the sour grape rantings of somebody who has been rejected - again real or not is unknown - by his adopted country of citizenship.

He chose to leave Japan, he chose to build a life outside and yet he still writes about what life is like for people who still live here or how people who do live here should feel. I find that insulting and completely out of touch.

He really does have a very bitter vibe. I meet a fair number of similar types in Vancouver, but they're usually the 1 or 2 year Eikaiwa types that read 3 of his pieces and insist that the G word is a direct equivalent to the N word a la the US, and steadfastly refuse to listen to any nuance or polite correction. I happily admit to not particulalry dewy-eyed nostalgia and even occasional apologetics, but I'll take that over this crazed bile. He sounds straitjacket worthy there.

I suppose there is also the little problem of having to milk whatever skill set he took with him for want of any options, but this is really pushing it. It will be interesting to see the reaction this piece gets.
