The safest safe

Postby Russell » Mon Jan 06, 2014 8:03 pm

I am thinking to buy a safe to store valuable documents in so as to protect them in case of fire. Some burglar resistance is also welcome, though not first priority.

Any advice or experiences?

One never knows how firs proof a safe is until it has been tried, so maybe there are not too many experiences, but nevertheless I hope for some useful pointers.

In the old country, most folks use bank safety deposit boxes. Seems like banks here offer them too, though a bit pricey (about $250/year at Mizuho).

I think safes would have some standards of fire protection, as in 120 minutes fire proof or 60 minutes. Not sure, what these standards are in Japan, though.

A Google search for "s120DIS site:.jp" (without the quotes) yields a few results, which might point you in the right direction?

If you buy a safe that weighs 30+ kilos, there aren't too many lone burglars who are going to try and walk off with it. If they're working as a team, forget it. The average burglar works alone though. And you can usually bolt them to some part of your house (from inside the safe), which beefs things up a bit.

Your local home centre should have a selection. Then you have to decide if you want keys (double tumbler is good), a mechanical combination lock (plus key in some cases), or one of them newfangled electronic combination locks. The problem with keys is obvious, but there are a gazillion ways you can hide keys, or keep them on your keychain, which brings up the possibility of them getting lost. Of course you could forget where you hid them ... or the combination ...

Wherever there is a solution there are more problems. But if your main worry is fire (which I agree with), then the problems are relatively easy to solve.

All safes have a fire rating.

Then you can use fireproof pouches inside the safe... Building them into a wall is usually a good call too...
