It's a tsunami wave height map, but to a lot of people it's a "gamma wave" map. OMG.

2004 version for comparison, fun and profit...

Quite.

Just when I thought people could not be any more stupid, someone comes along on the internet and lowers the bar . . .

The "gamma wave" crowd, in this case.
There is no excellent beauty, that hath not some strangeness in the proportion.

The do many things that are pointless, like asking a citizen why they're coming to America... In my case it was for a funeral and despite me saying "good morning sir" and being dressed in a black suit and black tie, he still had more questions for me.

I went home twice when my father was ill... the 2nd he had less than a day. I couldn't bring myself to say it though, as I didn't want it to feel like I was playing a card for false sympathies. I just said, "visiting family" despite the fact I was a nervous wreck on both flights.

That is why I always try to go to a Black or Latino Migra Officer. Never go to the female occifer... They have too much to prove and drill you. Note this is only a good idea for non whites. I have heard that blacks going to a black occifer is also a bad idea.

No offense to Gomi Girl or any other girl here, but I follow this across the board. Not just with immigration officials, but with ticket agents or anything. If you get pulled over by a police woman, my the lord have mercy on your soul.

The Japan Times, as long as you have cleared your cookies, wrote:In Japan, no escape from The Eye’s perpetual policing glare

Hey, all you residents heading abroad for the holidays, here’s a little experiment to try on yourself: When you return to Japan, take note of an interesting phenomenon that starts just as you deplane and plug back into Japanese society.

You’ll feel a palpable and intractable pressure — a pressure to conform to The Order, that standardized way of doing things in Japan. You can use it to get what you want, or you can defy it and feel the burn of its stare.

I call this pressure The Eye.

...bizarre paranoid rant continues...

Debito needs to get out a bit more. Just across the water, daily life in Korea invites open staring if you are not Korean or don't look similar to them. In places outside of Seoul, especially backwaters it can be truly annoying or arrogant - staring openly and laughing at you openly. Debito would probably start frothing at the mouth and end up in the clink for a while. A lot of otherwise cool foreigners get incredibly pissed off at the unapologetic rude stare that sweeps from your head and face to all over your body and unfortunately is not unusual in Korea.

The Japanese are for the most civilised people who tend to minimise their looking at foreigners. They are much more civilised in their airports generally than some of the arseholes in our home countries who act as if it's a personal insult that we don't dwell all year round in our own countries. I love the insolent remarks about how little baggage I carry when I go home and how this is supposedly a genuine issue that should involve airport security as I prepare to go through customs.

But Debito does have a notable supporter - Loco from Yokohama who is 'wowing' the world with his 2 books, one pretty recent. Personally I am not interested in providing this guy with half a yen of income no matter how valid he feels his points of view are as an African American in Japan. Before he published his first book he used to ask for money from readers of his blog because of the 'spoonfuls of goodness' he was supposedly giving them. Loco seems like a bit of a schmuck tho his persecution complex is more justified than Debito's.

Japanese citizens, by birth or naturalization, often have trouble coming back to Japan after years away. If a returnee can only speak English and has not so good Japanese, what kind of jobs can they get? Eikaiwa? If a returnee never was even close to fluent Japanese in the first place...

Are there "professor" jobs in some sort of "Anti-Japan Studies" program at any Korean or Chinese schools?

I quite taking any luggage through airports about 15 years ago because of exactly what you stated. I don't wear anything metal at all. Not even pants with zippers or metal buttons. I even fly back state side through Canada now and cross the border by car. Customs and airport security were ridiculous even before 9/11 now they think it gives them license to piss in your face and if you do anything but smile and say "thank you sir (or ma'am) may I have another" then the full fledged body cavity search commences.

I've said it before but I think the next time I go back I'll probably go by sea.

JAFO, I hope you're joking. I fly back to LA about 8-10 times a year and haven't ever been hassled except for when something like a double plated carbon clutch is in my check in luggage and they just don't know WTF it is. I've had more problems with ANA than I've ever had with security/customs/etc

Um no, sorry I really wish I was. I dunno how LAX is on international flights but Chicago is fucking ridiculous. I admit I used to carry far more cash than I should have (still within boundaries though), but the level of interrogation on two occasions was unwarranted.

Might I add I have never even been glanced at by japanese customs even when carrying gold coin. Maybe because I was bringing money in instead of out... but who knows. Maybe they got laid that morning ??? And I never usually have much good to say about japanese authority if that means anything.

Never go to white customs agents... White devil my man. And female agents are the worst apparently.

But i am assuming you are white with a white name, so i am not sure what is causing you issues at customs... You have a record?

Yep white devil here. I really I think its because I just look like a bad guy. Even though I wear collard shirts and pressed slacks it doesn't seem to matter. A friend of mine was a judge in MA and told me that when we first met, thought I was trouble. The flip side though is when I travel with the family, my kids seem to negate a lot of negative perception. I guess the image of a guy dragging armfuls of kids and luggage with the wife in tow seems to resonate with people no matter what he looks like. It just a good thing the kids have the wife's good looks because if they had my ugly mug we'd be in trouble.
