Big in Japan
NYTimes.com | Jan. 10, 2014
You might not know me, but I’m famous. Don’t feel bad. Until recently, I didn’t know I was famous either, and most days, even now, it’s hard to tell.
In 2010 I published a novel, “The Serialist"...
...
My book won a major Japanese literary contest, which was nice. Then it won another. Then another. Apparently this was extraordinary: No one had ever won all three before
...More...

I want to buy the book now. He sounds like a great guy and expresses the bewilderment of the FOB FG brilliantly yet humbly and without ceremony.

this is a great post by Mr Gordon and he does seem like a good person, more power to him. But since we are on the subject of NYTimes opeds and how they only publish opeds from people they commission to write them, not accepting articles over the transom from people they have not expressly contacted, so they commssioned him to write this piece since his book recently came out, see the author ID at the bottom and here is the real inside story on how
NYT oped articles are part of a scam or maybe just a confidence game.

NYTimes oped is a scam re

http://plogspot101.blogspot.tw/2014/01/ ... -scam.html

The New York Times Oped Page Only Prints Commissioned Opeds: That is a ''scam''
UPDATE: A British novelist friend who lives in London UK but knows well how the NYT OPED page OP-erates tells me today after reading this blog post: ''Off the record. I have corresponded with op-ed editors for years and have been published there a number of times. There is nothing dishonest about preferring authors of recently-published books. I benefited from this policy when ''TITLE OF MY NOVEL REDACTED'' was published; I'll benefit again, I hope, when my new novel TITLE OF NOVEL REDACTED comes out in 2018. There are good reasons for the policy. The appearance of the new book is itself a "news peg" that has become much more necessary over the years for the NY Times and other media -- that's a subject in itself. The author of a new book presumably knows the sources thoroughly and needs less editorial attention and fewer corrections. The op-ed also nicely 'piggybacks'' in a synergistic way with the book publisher's marketing and PR campaign, such as it is now, ***leading to more web traffic than an op-ed without a book link typically gets. [*** AH WEB TRAFFIC! EYEBALLS! EVEN THE NYT PLAYS THIS GAME NOW?] Of course writers without new books published by major imprints receive less space because of this policy, but it also simplifies NYT editors' work. Remember that e-mail and the passion of millions of individuals, not to mention the campaigns of interest groups, floods the NYT Times in-box every day. So the NYT Times op-ed page is a ''scam'' only if reality itself is a ''scam'', which technically is incorrect. It's a confidence game.''---------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: THIS IS HOW THE NEW YORK TIMES ROPES WRITERS INTO WRITING TIMELY OPEDS FOR THEM. THEY CONTACT AUTHORS OF NEW BOOK -- FROM A LIST THEY GET FROM THE TOP PUBLISHERS IN THE WORLD -- AND THEN THEY PERSONALLY WRITE TO THE AUTHOR AND ASK HIM OR HER TO WRITE AN OPED FOR THEM BASED A BIT ON THE BOOK, SO THAT THE TIMES CAN THEY TELL READERS "SEE WE ARE ON TOP OF THINGS, WE GET ALL THE TRENDY NEW AUTHORS TO WRITE FOR US." MEANWHILE, THEY NEVER ACCEPT OPEDS FROM UNKNOWN WRITERS OR THINKERS WITH IMPORTANT THINGS TO OPED ABOUT. THE NYT OPED PAGE IS A SCAM. DO NOT BELIEVE ONE WORD THAT TRISH HALL SAYS ONLINE ABOUT "ANYONE CAN WRITE FOR US." BULLSHIT. ASK DAVID MIKICS. HE WAS CONTACTED THE SAME WAY. AND NOTICE, HEHE, HE JUST PUBLISHED A NEW BOOK. THIS IS THE TIMES M.O. AND ITS BULLSHIT AND UNFAIR TO OTHER WRITERS IN THE WORLD.
