Any story where somebody is trying to spin their tales trying to get sympathy for bad or stupid behavior gets scrutinized by pedantic fact checkers. And then the story gets picked to pieces.

If the person doesn't get out in front if it and appears to be truly sorry then people go into attack mode.

If the person says "oh shit I screwed up!! help me!" then this gets a better reaction than "I have been victimized by a cruel system/yakuza/police/immigration" pick your protagonist of choice.

If you then say "oh shit, I didn't know that, my bad, how can I fix it?" Then there is some opportunity for redemption (MQT *nearly* but not quite tried this) but if you still try to prove how you are right when the whole world knows you are wrong (eg out J-school friend) then people will continue to try to show you the error of your ways.

I was a bit closer to the fallout than most people and saw first hand the stress on his staff and people he was in business with. They all had no clue and were becoming unhinged. It was a surreal time so I am curious as to how this plays out.

Who knows what was going on in his head at the time. I want to be generous and not assume this was motivated by his dick or a girlfriend but the Yakuza ate my homework story has way too many holes in it.

Perhaps we may never know. Maybe he doesn't either if it was a freaky mid life existential crisis. But trying to spin a Yakuza story if it isn't true is a recipe for disaster. His reputation is in tatters.

As for the FG successes who've beat the rap, I'm betting they weren't true gaijin grifters: that is, they did #1 & #2, but did not do #3/#4. I have a soft spot too for people that commit an slip, get busted, reflect, admit, pay their dues, and recover.

I root for the true underdogs.

As for the shameless g-grifter with the "never admit you did anything wrong ever and never accept blame or punishment" personality flaw, I have little sympathy for these people.
