ANA Ad crashes and burns

Postby Taro Toporific » Sun Jan 19, 2014 11:17 pm

Back from a long hiatus, today's JapanProbe points out a new "crude" ANA commercial:
“Let’s change the image of Japanese people.” And then we get the supposedly humorous ending. One of the Japanese guys is suddenly wearing a blonde wig and a big rubber nose.

For shits and giggles, I wrote to ANA complaining about their latest ad suggesting it was tacky, juvenile and racially offensive. They replied within a few hours:

Dear Gomi Girl,

Thank you for your email received on January 20, 2014 informing us of
your disappointment with our new television commercial, which started
airing from January 18, 2014.

First of all, we genuinely regret the circumstances that prompted you to
write to us, and the unpleasantness caused. Although it is certainly not our
intention to advocate discrimination or give offense in any way, we are very
sorry to know that our television commercial gave such an impression.

We have immediately forwarded your comments to the relevant sections
involved for further review, to be more careful about the contents and the
images portrayed in our advertisements, and can assure you that your opinion
will be taken into consideration in improving them to provide
all of our customers with high quality customer satisfaction.

Ms Gomi Girl, we thank you for taking the time to write and share your
frank opinions, and we truly regret the negative impressions you received.
Since ANA values your business and good opinion, we look forward to another
opportunity to serve your future travel needs.

Sincerely yours,

ANA apologizes over racial stereotyping in new TV commercial
Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA) said Monday it is apologizing individually to customers who call to complain about racial stereotyping in a new TV commercial, but has not decided whether it should pull the ad.

ANA started airing the new 30-second television advertisement on Saturday, aimed at promoting its beefed up schedule of international flights from Tokyo’s Haneda airport in March.

In the commercial, two Japanese men in ANA uniform discuss in English how they might boost the image of the airline as an international carrier.

One of them says: “Let’s change the image of Japanese people.” “Sure,” replies the other, who is now wearing a blonde wig and an improbably long rubber nose.

The ad caused a stir among English-language users of social media in Japan...

An ANA spokeswoman said the carrier “has received calls from customers, mostly foreigners, complaining about the ad.”

"Mostly foreigners"?

If they're using the language correctly, that means some Japanese people complained too.

What did you say? I need a good giggle.

I wrote via the web form. Mine was fairly short and sweet saying that it was a juvenile ad and that I was offended as a long time resident of Tokyo and an ANA customer in the past.

well... if they wrote in Japanese and signed with a traditional japanese name.... you make the J-club.

yes... seing your last name would automatically exclude you from the j-club and put you in the f-club and despite your writing skills, your non japanese soul and brain could never pass as one of the j-loins and j-eggs...

ANA crashes and burns

Postby matsuki » Tue Jan 21, 2014 2:22 pm

I got no reply from them but their youtube video is still up.

[edit] reply is:

Dear Mr. Choko,

Thank you for your patronage as an ANA “Plutonium Service” member, and thank you for your email received on January 20, 2014 informing us of your disappointment with our new advertisement, which began airing on January 18, 2014.

The intention of this advertisement was to highlight the imminent expansion of international flights from Haneda Airport, while encouraging Japanese citizens (among whom are the ANA employees depicted) to travel abroad and become greater players on the “global stage.” However, the self-depreciating humor contained in the video has been interpreted in a manner which differs significantly from ANA’s intention.

While there was no intention whatsoever to portray anyone in a negative light, we recognize that some have found the commercial offensive, and deeply regret any resulting uneasiness or displeasure caused. Moreover, we also recognize the need to be more careful about the contents and the images portrayed in our advertisements.

As we at ANA are highly sensitive to the opinions of our valued customers, after careful consideration we have decided to temporarily cease further usage of these advertisements, and release a revised version shortly.

Mr. Choko, as the goal of ANA is to offer an unsurpassed level of excellence in service to customers from all countries and cultures, we are sincerely grateful to you for having taken the time to share your views.
We would like to assure you that we take this matter seriously, and hope to have the opportunity to serve your travel needs in the near future.

Sincerely yours,

...and my reply

Mrs. Minaso Sari

Are you seriously missing the whole point of why it's offensive??

It is not the " self-depreciating humor " of the characters. It's the "gaijin" mask one of them wears.

The only real humor in the whole commercial is the fact that (as you say) you want Japanese citizens to [travel abroad and become greater players on the “global stage.”] Well the "global stage" finds people wearing comical masks of other ethnicities offensive. So you are, in fact, encouraging Japanese citizens to commit acts of offense on the "global stage."

So google blackface, yellowface, and whiteface...read up, and tell me why you think ANA felt it was ok to create and promote this kind of offensive and racist crap on the "global stage."

Thank you,

And now I wonder how much of the outrage shown here at the "yellowface!!" calls by ethnic Asians in the US is really just responding to a phenomenon like this one: namely, a group of well educated shit stirrers with time on their hands and access to an internet connection. Shit stirrers who are (I am pretty certain) not in actual fact taking offence, just giving it a go to see how far their voice can echo.

Offence is a remarkable resource. It can easily be taken, even when there is none given.

I hate ANA either way so paint me biased but can we all just agree it's in pretty poor taste?

That being said, if United Airlines did the reverse of this with two white d00ds, one donning a comically flat faced, slit eyed mask and black bowl haircut wig, we all know it would not end so well for the airline.

...on the other hand, there's this (Asian Americans outraged) LOL

cos-racist-cbs-himym-de-630x210[1].jpg

I saw the episode and it was nothing more than applying cheesey kung fu stereotypes to the slapping joke in the series. Not offensive in the least but pretty lame.

But if doing your makeup, hair, and wearing historically inspired outfits in weird attempts to look like people of other cultures offends Asian Americans and amounts to racism or hijacking a culture, Asia is far more racist than I ever thought.

Weird, all I ever heard it used was referring to Pakistani peepz...Urban Dictionary to the rescue:

A paki is a word used to describe a person from south asia, Usually works for T-Mobile or in a call centre of some kind.. eventually progressing to the goal of self employed Kebab shop owner.

Paki's are tax exempt and always have a brother that can get it cheaper. They all drive the same VW golf, and always carry more than one mobile phone, usually the other mobile contains terrorist texts messages and the phone numbers of numerous other terrorist. Paki phones usually carry PDF version of holy Qur'an on them, some have even branched out and have iPhone SDK developer programs in which the created their own app called.. "iExplode" unfortunatly for the paki's it was rejected by apple...

typical paki names consist of: sanjee, abdul and kuri sawse
Male 1: "check out this paki he's doing a donut in his car"
Male 2: "is that a toyota corola?"
Male 1: "no, its a VW golf"

Offence is a remarkable resource. It can easily be taken, even when there is none given.

I hate ANA either way so paint me biased but can we all just agree it's in pretty poor taste?

That being said, if United Airlines did the reverse of this with two white d00ds, one donning a comically flat faced, slit eyed mask and black bowl haircut wig, we all know it would not end so well for the airline.

...on the other hand, there's this (Asian Americans outraged) LOL

I saw the episode and it was nothing more than applying cheesey kung fu stereotypes to the slapping joke in the series. Not offensive in the least but pretty lame.

But if doing your makeup, hair, and wearing historically inspired outfits in weird attempts to look like people of other cultures offends Asian Americans and amounts to racism or hijacking a culture, Asia is far more racist than I ever thought.

You mean Bengali....though apparently her mother is half Russian so I guess she gets a pass.
Pakistan is a broad term man despite it deriving from Pakistani.

Just like wet back..

I've worked with Brits for like 6 years now... They don't really differentiate. Same with Scandinavian countries and the term Turks.

Re: Random Nihonjin Video of the Day

This was the email I received earlier today.
Dear Mr. Canman

Thank you for your patronage as an ANA Super Flyers Card member,
and thank you for your email received on January 20, 2014 informing us
of your disappointment with our new advertisement, which began airing
on January 18, 2014.

The intention of this advertisement was to highlight the imminent expansion of
international flights from Haneda Airport, while encouraging Japanese citizens
(among whom are the ANA employees depicted) to travel abroad and become
greater players on the “global stage.” However, the self-depreciating humor
contained in the video has been interpreted in a manner which differs significantly
from ANA’s intention.

While there was no intention whatsoever to portray anyone in a negative light,
we recognize that some have found the commercial offensive, and deeply regret
any resulting uneasiness or displeasure caused. Moreover, we also recognize the
need to be more careful about the contents and the images portrayed in
our advertisements.

As we at ANA are highly sensitive to the opinions of our valued customers, after
careful consideration we have decided to temporarily cease further usage of these
advertisements, and release a revised version shortly.

Mr. Canman, as the goal of ANA is to offer an unsurpassed level of excellence in
service to customers from all countries and cultures, we are sincerely grateful to
you for having taken the time to share your views.
We would like to assure you that we take this matter seriously, and hope to have the
opportunity to serve your travel needs in the near future.

Sincerely,

Miho Minagawa

Miho must be a busy girl these days, writing all these letters!

Copy paste copy past copy paste...

I still don't get how the comic gaijin mask, what most reasonable people find tasteless, is "self depreciating humor."

I should totally visit their counter in person while I'm at the airport...

BTW, the video is still up....
