Heading to sapporo any recommendations?

Postby J.A.F.O » Sun Jan 26, 2014 9:54 pm

I'm going to Hokaido for about a week. Mostly sapporo but I'll have a rental car for the time. Any great things to check out? I could always read the brochure but figured you guys/gals may have some better first hand knowledge.

Thanks

Bring those spiked rubber harness that slip on shoes to walk on ice and snow. Like car snowchains but for h00mans. If not, oversize socks from 100y shop that you put over your shoes will do.
If you drive countryside try to have a minimum bug out gear, warming pads emergency blanket, food, water. Maybe Hammerman have a more readily shorte-able list... Also, never leave the car after breakdown or accident.

There are some old brick warehouses in Otaru that make for some nice walking in a picturesque neighborhood along the riverside, along with decent hot springs around town. Both Sapporo Breweries and Kirin have all-you-can-eat/drink deals at their locations. Sapporo Breweries had nicer digs, Kirin had better food. Of course it was the '90s, so things change.

Strolling in Otaru is a seasonal activity. It is a bit harder if he is going right now.

Thanks for the tips, heading out tomorrow morning. Might be able to get some snowboarding in. :spin: Also maybe stop at the Nikka whiskey distillery since you mentioned otaru. Onsen would be fun but they tend not to like my tattoos.

I'll make sure to keep an extra blanket or two in the car with some bug out gear. Be back in a week all. Take care.

And I heard that Hokkaido is popular among Chinese, because some lake there is featured in a soap series that used to be popular in China.

Made it back and had a pretty good time. I'll post some pics later. I will say that driving in sapporo is infinitely better than driving in most japanese cities I've been too. (even with the snow) The streets are all in grid like manner making navigation a breeze. Even the gps worked amazingly well. Kyoto so far is the next best as far as roads that make some logical sense. Definitely considering moving.

I did check out Otaru. Very touristy but still quaint. I don't really get the venician museum though. If I wanted to see venice I would travel to venice. We really didn't see any of the locals anywhere near the strip except to sell stuff. So I can only imagine it's for tourists. I think I would be more interested in an ainu museum, even if its not spectacular.

But ... you're based in Okinawa, right?
The same Okinawa that's known for being one of the worst places in the country to drive, right?

Well ... except for maybe Osaka and Nagoya ...

EDIT: BTW, glad your vacation up north went well.

Having driven in all three locations, Okinawa is the worst, hands down.

In terms of traffic accidents, I remember Osaka to be the worst, closely followed by Hyogo. A yellow traffic signal here means accelerate, so that 6 more cars can pass the signals behind you.

Driving in Kyoto is neither a breeze, with all them bicycles and traffic jams...

A few shots I snapped off while in sapporo. One or two nice days but mostly snowy... which is just fine with me.
