I'm guessing it's shoganai in the form of Tokyo doesn't have any snowplows...or other useful tools for dealing with snow

The bright side is the 4 new blizzzzaks I bought are damn good. No scares for me while I saw plenty of Darwin award worth slides from other cars.

Damn you Wu! I'm settling for adding Sti badges to my franken-opelabaru when I really need so be at the Mitsu dealer making copies of your keys!

On another note, it was hilarious how scared the locals were of mild hills. Waited 30mins at one because a kei truck was too scared to attempt the hill and have to wait somewhere before reaching the top.

C'mon. You aren't really taken in by that little sleight of hand are you? If so, the farmers around here are streets ahead of you. It's 10% as soon as it matters.

Which is fine because Abenonics said 2% inflation was the target. So, companies will drop prices by 3% and tax will add 5% and we will get 2%. Also, companies will pay bumper bonuses in April because Abe said so and Abebnomics has doubled money supply. Exactly where the doubled money supply is hiding at present is a bit less than obvious. An economics professor of my acquaintance tells me that it is with the banks via 10 year/1% JGov bond repurchases cos they is obviously now a sorry loser of a bet. The money to purchase said sorry losers of a bet has been conjured out of thin air - aka as fast as the BOJ can run the printing presses. And also, "Japan is Back" as Mr Abe said. So everyone be mindful to get with the program. We thank you for your co-operation and God Bless the Banks.

Not sure I'd like to drive on an elevated concrete highway whose rebar has been exposed to the effects of being dusted with liberal amounts of industrial salt.

But but but, the rebar is inside the concrete and should not be affected by the salt isn't it?

Anyways, methinks we are better of than in China, where they close the highways in case of rain (dunno whether this is the general policy, but I had one such experience).

I think elevated highways + snow/ice makes the access ramps a complete clusterfuck.

Yup ... that sucked.

Digging the car out this morning.

Sendai had the heaviest snowfall recorded for 74 years. The neighbours are freaking out.
The folks across the road have a car port over their cars, and they still had to do some digging.

That was the plan ... but you know what they say about the plans of mice and men ...

It really wouldn't have made a huge difference to the amount of work required this time though. I still had to clear the pathways and steps around the house, and the road in front (it's a private road, so no municipal snow removal for us). Took a couple of hours. My body hurts.

Central Tokyo was left under 24 centimeters (9.4 inches) of snow this morning from yesterday’s downfall, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Public broadcaster NHK said the snowfall was the heaviest in 45 years.
Other parts of greater Tokyo saw as much as 50 centimeters, a record for the region, the meteorological agency said. The weather disrupted flights and train services, and caused power outages across the region.

Neighbour had one of those roofs fitted on his balcony last year, the ones which cost around 100,000JPY and keep off the UV and rain. It came off under the weight of the snow and took a chunk of the outer wall with it last night. I noticed he wasn't his usual cheery self when we were shoveling snow this morning, found out later from the wife.

Guess his mood wasn't helped by the sight of everyone else hastily brushing the snow of theirs after seeing his.

The kids built a huge igloo in the neighbour's yard, with a slide down the back, came home with rosy cheeks and wet bums.

My neighbour's car port has its roof inclined in an aesthetically logical way which means all the slow slides off right onto the bit of Yanpa Territory round the north side of Chez Yanpa which never gets much sunlight

hahahahaha

It's a way of telling people from 3rd world nations that it's OK to have corrugated iron shacks play a role in the architectural vernacular of your capital city.

True story - when I was much smaller octopus, my uncle was living in Kenya and we once spent a few weeks there, and ended up being driven in and out of Nairobi a fair bit. Fast forward a few years and I am a coach on my first trip to Asia, and upon my first sighting of a residential area of the country's capital I thought something along the lines of "you know old chap, that view of densely-packed wooden shack-like buildings with utility poles strung wily-nily along narrow winding streets without any evident plan puts me in mind of the shanty settlements on the outskirts of Nairobi".

At least Nairobi has an excuse, like so many things here, residential housing trends seem to be devolving instead of progressing.

Yeah, they were great over the weekend, should prove useful tomorrow night when I head out your way.

Here we go again. Only effect I've seen so far is that my local subway station has decided to turn on the air conditioning on the platform. Puzzled me a bit at first, but then I realized obviously they are trying to transfer the warm indoor air outside, to melt the snow. Seems to be working like a charm.

11 big ones here and still snowing. Easing off now but a significant fall in less than 10 hours.

Unheard of measures taken in response - eventually. Rubbish collection cancelled and happening tomorrow - Popular overtime opportunity one suspects. Postman hasn't done his round - Quite right too as these are no conditions for heavily loaded Honda Super Cubs. Kids all being sent home from school after lunch - I can't understand why they were dragged in. Not smart to have kids on cycles in this, especially as the local drivers have very little experience with snow and ice.

Wettish white stuff has been falling here all day, not settling (in fact it seems to be causing the remaning snow heaps to melt) but enough to delay the trains, for whatever reason (wrong kind of snow?).
