Please allow us to respond by first offering once again our sincere apology
and remorse for the fact that our recent advertisement has offended you.
We fully acknowledge and deeply regret that this has been a result of
our misjudgment.

ANA received a large volume of feedback from both and Japanese non-Japanese
customers, and accordingly decided to cancel the advertisement immediately.
A revised version has since been released.

We would also like to reiterate that there was absolutely no intention to
cause offense to anyone.  If you will allow us to further explain, in all sincerity,
the target of the attempt at parody was neither non-Japanese people nor their appearance.
Rather it was the stereotypical view that some Japanese may hold of foreigners,
and by extension their insular reluctance or trepidation in traveling abroad,
embracing or accepting other cultures and customs (i.e., hugging in public),
and otherwise participating in globalization.

In other words, the visual pun was meant to satirize the pilot’s stereotypical image
of foreigners, not to endorse or condone it. The consistent theme running through
the entire ad was intended to be an encouragement to break free of stereotypes
and pre-conceived notions (beginning with the image of Haneda as a domestic-only airport).

Nonetheless, we fully understand that there is no excuse for having caused insult,
even if unintentional. The clear cause of misjudgment on the part of ANA was
a lack of understanding and recognition that the visual impact of the ad could
obfuscate the intended meaning, and was thus likely to offend some viewers.
As an international airline, we must be aware that for some people,
in some societies, any physical characterization that includes stereotypical aspects
 (admirable or not) of a particular race or culture could be construed as patently
offensive, regardless of context or intent.

Mr. Chokoballs, it is our genuine hope that the above explanation will
serve to gain your understanding.

What is probably closer to the truth is that some out of touch, parochial advertising salaryman thought it was funny to use a silly wig and nose in an ad campaign and it was rubber stamped by equally out of touch clients and management. But hey - they used English so it must have been a cool idea right?

If this, (and this is a big IF) was the actual premise from the getgo, then which idiot committee thought it was a good idea? IMHO any advertising campaign that needs such a round-about explanation was problematic from the outset. Talk about overthinking "satire"..
