It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I thought Japan started this trend much earlier when the government used "Japanese snow is different" as justification for slapping tax barriers on imported skis. I believe this is a true story.

Did their long intestines from ages of agriculture give them some sort of civilizing edge in making polite excuses to those recently descended from hunter-gatherer barbarian traders?

The "Japanese snow is unique" story is quite old (I first heard it waaaay pre Internet), but if you google that simple phrase you'll get more hits than you'll have time to read.

As for the intestines thing, I was personally involved in proving that theory to be bullshit during a colonoscopy examination a couple of years ago, at least in the large intestine department. The doctor explained that my colon was considerably longer than the average Japanese person (by about 80cm, if I remember correctly), which reverses the traditionally held belief. Surprise, surprise... the length of your intestine is related to body size, not race!

You can certainly say that it takes a lot of guts to make such a statement.

Here we go ... it has just started snowing up here again .

Snow is still piled up everywhere from the last ultra-dump, so it's going to build up fast.
According to the weather man it'll snow from this evening right through to tomorrow evening, and then again on Sunday.

I was out buying kerosene and a few other supplies this morning, and snow shovels were flying off the selves. Despite being "Tohoku" it normally doesn't snow that much in my area, and that last snowfall kind of freaked the locals out so, with the threat of more of the same tomorrow, they're all out buying tools to dig themselves out.

More digging ... oh yay ...

My winter vehicle is right where I left it when I had to leave the Greater Nagoya Area many years ago...it's too bad, the charges never stuck.

Yup, it's settling with a vengeance... the Mrs. just texted from the home station up on the plain something like "oh shit such a lot of snow here" (though bear in mind this is Tokyo, so all relative).

Saw meltwater pouring in sheets off a metro train 7 or 8 km from where it enters the tunnel, which was quite impressive.

The road is already white. Just a coating at this point, but that means it'll pile up if it keeps snowing (it will). I am not looking forward to whenever it stops.

At this point I should probably boast that the Hammer household now has a second snow shovel! Mrs. Hammer, not realising what she's getting herself in for, offered to help next time it snows, so I bought her her very own shovel! Lucky girl.

That looks pretty snowy. Could be a real pain in the arse if it keeps up.
Just watching the news and central areas like Shinjuku don't look too bad, but out at Hachioji it looks a lot worse.

Last time I was laughing at all the snow in Tokyo while we had very little here, but then the tables turned and we got dumped on. I'll keep the nyah-nyah-nyahs under control this time 'cause it looks like it might happen again.

It is more slushy than anything else. Fortunately all the cars that I have seen are wearing chains and driving really slowly.

But I was waiting for the Hachiko bus with my son for more than 30 minutes and we froze so we jumped in a cab - seems to be lots on the road which is good.

Slushy in town, but it's pretty thick on the ground out here in the sticks, I left Aoyama in the slush at 4.30-ish after the jinjibu told us to clear out ASAP, took twice as long to get home as usual, trains and buses all going slow, and by the time I got to 3 Hawk City the snow was getting seriously deep. Pretty soon the roads will be blocked up with gently spinning wheels.

Saw one guy going down the Tohachi on his scooter, I really don't think he was going to make it down the hill by ICU in one piece. It's cheaper to leave your machine and ride home by train, bus and/or taxi than pay for the repairs on your bike and person.

I tried to walk to the station this morning at 7am in the falling sky crap and frozen slush-ice-snow. Actually, it must have been kind a funny to watch me go step, step, and plop -- step, step, and plop, -- step, step, and plop...on my crutches. :biggrin2:

I've been sitting here quietly listening to you Pacific coast folk, because believe me, I can understand what it is like to deal with a dump of snow especially for you when your infrastructure isn't set up for dealing with it. I am also aware that a quarter of the population of the country lives in the Kanto area so your media-centrism is justified to an extent.

However may I be allowed to just say, OK, this year has been light for me so far, with far less days digging a route for my car to get out of the carport, and yay! I haven't had to dig my way out of the front door yet, well, except for that one time but it wasn't really in earnest.

But.

Plus 50 cm overnight last night, with more to come (and it will be heavy weight stuff) and a work project which takes me off site today. I am just off to wade out to the carport to dig a path for the car, and I can see I will have to dig a path back at the end of the day too. I love living where I do, but sometimes it can be beyond a joke.

(News Flash: I just got a phone call from the work destination: there has been an avalanche on the one road in to it, so I have a reprieve until that is cleared)

I feel for ya. And that is why, unless someone was paying me a LOT of moolah, I would never choose to live on that side of the island. I don't mind having to dig myself out a couple of times a year, but if it's going to be the daily routine I'm looking for other options.

Of course having said that ... I am open to offers of substantial moolah ...
