Plane from Tokyo diverts to Anchorage after passenger goes 'berserk'
A commercial jetliner flying from Tokyo to New York City was diverted to Anchorage early Monday after a passenger on the flight went "berserk" and had to be zip-tied to a seat by flight attendants.

Nobuya Michael Ochinero, 38, was arrested by federal agents and police officers at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport early on Monday, according to the FBI.

Ochinero seemed volatile from the time he boarded All Nippon Airways Flight 10, said Chuck Lustig, a Human Rights Watch deputy executive director who was seated in front of the man.

The flight is supposed to be a 12.5 hour nonstop haul from Tokyo to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport.

"He was berserk from the moment he got on the plane. He was yelling and screaming, spitting on the floor. He was smacking the back of my seat and other passengers' seats," Lustig said.

Ochinero began harassing flight attendants and yelling, he said.

"It was more like crazy grunting. Nothing really intelligible."

Flight attendants tried in vain to calm the man down, Lustig said. Finally, crew members and passengers hatched a plan to subdue Ochinero.

They used zip-tie handcuffs, which were apparently onboard the Boeing 777, to tie the man to a seat. Lustig said Ochinero tried to spit at the passengers and crew.

"He was struggling from time to time. He'd stop and talk to people and struggle some more."

Two of the men who helped subdue Ochinero sat guard for the next hour or two, until an announcement came from the cockpit: Flight 10 was being diverted to Anchorage due to a passenger who posed a security concern.

By that time the entire coach section -- "and probably the people in business class and first," Lustig said -- knew what was going on.

Some of the other passengers on the plane seemed shaken by the incident.

"It was a little scary. But the crew handled it amazingly well."

It wasn't clear whether the man was intoxicated or mentally unstable, he said.

A spokesperson for All Nippon Airways said the airline is still gathering facts about what happened on the flight...

Well... A Boeing 777... Zip ties, duck tape and WD40 are part of the emergency toolbox I presume...

Man who caused ANA plane diversion to Alaska says he was drinking
A passenger whose behavior caused a commercial airline flying from Tokyo to New York City to be diverted to Anchorage told federal investigators he had been drinking on the plane, court documents state.

Nobuya Michael Ochinero, 38, who has dual citizenship in Japan and the United States, the affidavit says, was arrested and interviewed by FBI agents early Monday, the Anchorage Daily News reported Wednesday.

He has been charged with interfering with flight crew members and attendants. He pleaded not guilty during an initial court appearance on Tuesday, his attorney, Jamie McGrady with the public defender’s office, said.

The affidavit unsealed says Ochinero told investigators he had about four shots of gin and two beers during the flight before getting upset and yelling at flight attendants when they refused to serve him more alcohol.

The sworn statement by FBI special agent Angela M Strause also says dozens of pill packets were found in Ochinero’s carry-on luggage, which he said were used for treating conditions such as psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

At an Anchorage jail, Ochinero had a blood-alcohol level of 0.137, Strause said. The amount is well over the legal limit to drive.

One flight attendant told investigators Ochinero pulled on the scarf around her neck and began swearing when she refused to serve him more alcohol. Another crew member said Ochinero struck and pushed her as she tried to calm him, according to the affidavit.

Ochinero told investigators he didn’t want the flight attendants to touch him. He was eventually restrained by crew members and passengers using zip-tie handcuffs.

Ahem...

I recall Greji once pointing out that although it was technically not permissible, that in practice it was relatively common and officials generally looked the other way. I would suspect that when things like this happen that the perp is encouraged to fall into line with the rules.

He sounds like a troubled individual, I'm guessing a bochan who woke up one day and found being bilingual wasn't unique anymore, and the walls started closing in.

While I would never suggest any sort of analytic validity, I have long thought that way too many bi-kids are borderline Rainman types, not to mention the disturbing prevalence of dual subliteracy (i.e. substandard in both languages). But that could be me falling into BS Jpn stereotypes of Bi-kids as always intelligent, bilingual, etc, or the old Anglocentric one that any kid with an Ethnic parent is genetically bilingual/bicultural, when of course, they're just kids making their own way in a weirderer and weirderer world.

While I agree that even a light read of his profile on FB or the translator's clearing house shows he is probably all you said, I would like to see him chucked in the hoosecow even for a symbolic sentence as a warning to this rash of emotard misbehaviour. I always wonder how such passengers get away without taking a serious beating from their fellow passengers. Besides, a short jail term might cure him of that eyeliner habit.

Any particular reason you feel sorry for him, other than the obvious fact that he is a pathetic doofus void of self-control or common decency? I think it's nice you do, but I am not there yet. I'd like to see crimes of spastic self-indulgence dealt with in draconian terms, not enlightened ones. Especially on any air route I might fly.

Not that there would be anything wrong with that................. :biggrin2:

I was actually trying to come up with a snappy term for so-called Halfies, which I really do think is a deplorable term. "Doubles" is just flat out gay (in the olden sense), "International Children" just sounds like a polite term for young Somalian refugees now on gov't assistance, and Bi-racial/bi-cultural is too long, although I suppose BRBC could be a start.

It could well appeal to the sort that tend to flock to obfuscatory jargon like stupid moths to flames.

To be fair, our mestizos are mostly Metis, and we're as small M 'merkin as it gets.

Kinda neat he can pull the accented e there. It looks downright official that way.

On a Mac keyboard it's all option+key and then character (Option is Alt on a Windoze kbd, I think).

So, to do this: é
All you do is press the [e] key while holding the [Option] key, then release [Option] and type [e].
The umlaut (ü) is the same sequence with the [u] key.
Try those for starters.

The world of Windows is less smooth, I fear.
ALT + a letter is usually mapped to menu shortcuts.

ALT + a four digit number seems to be what people use.

Language support on Windows still sucks ... and Windows users wonder why Mac users don't see the attraction.
