Usually you only hear Kumagaya mentioned with peak summer temperatures. It is still 32 cm at time of posting. I know that is not Tomei Expressway route, but it is an indication of how extraordinary this snowfall was for Kanto.

It's called continental style climate:
Brutally cold in winter
Abominatly hot in summer.
Verdun can go from -20 to +40 over the year. Metal doors are not really popular... Unless you want something not openning half of the year and not closing the other half...

Takes me back...

-45 to +40 something back in the day. Had their hands full keeping roads from breaking up year to year.

Need to get a sturdier snow shovel, the metal strip has come off already.

last year's snow shovel bit the dust, or should I say ice, the first round of clearing this year, it was already split after being roughly abused digging out cars last year. The wife went out and got a metal shovel, bit pricey but we have a feeling it will be getting regular use. Neighbour's plastic shovel's wooden haft broke too.

Yeah, I think this shovel is suitable for the 5cm-and-melts snow lite that we usually get... Need to get something more solid, if there are any still available.

the plastic ones sell out fast because they are light and easy to use ...... and break

if you look for a hardware store without a car park you will probably still find a decent shovel

With apologies to those who live in seriously snowy environments ... ENOUGH ALREADY!!

Well, I had the digging out my front door in earnest this morning, having managed to escape through the garage. Heavy, wet snow, and nowhere to put it!

I hope Wednesday is not a train stopping day, as I have a rare trip to Kanto which I can't change the date for.

57cm here in Hachinohe! Took me all day to clear two parking areas. Now the wind has picked up and everything is frozen solid. They have closed all schools tomorrow, as there are no sidewalks to walk on. Have never experienced snow like this before. And they are calling for more on Tuesday or Wednesday. Not sure where I'm going to put any more of the white stuff!

Huge spiral of wind between tohoku and the hiroshima place-region.
Seems to be going: tohoku-pacific(load on wet)-hiroshima-Korea-sea of japan(loading on russian cold)-back to tohoku

Although not as severe as where you guys are, we have a similar problem here too.The roads are pretty much clear, but all the snow that was moved to make it so is piled up here and there to the point that if it snows heavily again we're going to have a serious storage problem.

Bring it on... 6 metre road with a field opposite  . Though another couple of falls like the last ones and we'll have to shovel the snow over the fence into the field. OTOH I do clear the road in front of the neighbouring house occupied by a nice-but-frail old dude, and also get a drive's worth of snow from the house on the other side dumped in an inconvenient corner.

In highland Geefoo we used to melt it (we'd get 3 or 4 1 metre dumps in an average winter): you need the right terrain somwhere handy, but what you do is make a melting pool using your garden hose. The locals used to use blue tarps, but my house had a natural sump. I put a few inches of water down, and it would usually melt quickly if it was above about -5 C with high humidity. Even at lower temperatures you can shift a fair volume just with cold running water. Try to keep the driveway dry, for obvious reasons. If you can get to it before that weird marshmallow collapse thing it does it shovels so much more easily I actually used to get up at Their hours to do it, and I never minded the exercise. A brilliant full body workout if you use your legs.

A brilliant tip. Spock's Logic Award of the month

The ole Shotengai still has its uses. A pity they can't/won't cut their prices. I'd shop there regularly if they did.

I'm noticing a lot of the perishable goods which are sourced in Kanto are not getting distributed here. For example, Yamazaki bread is not getting to the stores, but Pasco (from Chubu) is. This in itself is not surprising, but I was wondering if goods were still scarce within Kanto. Is distribution taking place pretty much as normal within Kanto?

Stores and conbinis look like they did after 3/11.....and none of my packages from Kanto have been delivered  ...but there is still plenty of Niigata "soul food" at the restaurants.

Salad was completely out of stock at the konbini I frequent on my way to the boiler room (due to the transportation conditions, apparently).

I've got my eye on the weather too. At the moment it is looking like Wednesday will be safe, just cloudy, and Thursday is the possible snow day.

Toilet paper is likely to be Fuji City, Shizuoka. What is your beer brand?

My package from Kanagawa unexpectedly arrived today.

Dunno how they got it transported over that supposedly closed expressway...

Having got off at the station there for some reason once, I can imagine that to be the case.

In an emergency, anything that is vaguely drinkable.

Meanwhile I have learnt from NHK that if the external air conditioner unit is blocked by snow, the air conditioner will not function effectively.

It's good to be getting value for money from that license fee at last...

Yeesh, 19+ dead from this storm cycle!!!!!!!!!!!

You kids play and drive safe out there, eh!!??????? Just breathe and take a happy happy snow day. It is textbook Shikata ga nai, after all.

Also, let's not forget that bivouac kit in the car. Even if it's just a local run.

I'm a little surpised you didn't already know that.............

OTOH, 12% of viewers did just learn that, and now they know. I know at least 3 very fine older gentlemen that admit to having been saved from an Itadakenai episode by the instructions on the train station western toilets. Sort of a cute head shaker, all that.

Also, if you carry a camping stove and fuel (and a pot) you can make water. Nice for hot tea and a cup of instant ramen, which is surprisingly edible when in those situations. I used to carry freeze dried camp food, which is also dead easy and good at those times.

And let us not forget the snow shovel. Like a proper one, not one of those 580 yen POS.

For that fee at least they should've educated them viewers that the way to melt the snow blocking the external unit is to turn on the 冷房...
