MOJ site for respecting foreigner's rights

Postby BigInJapan » Thu Mar 06, 2014 9:47 am

The MOJ (Ministry of Justice) posted this ad on Yahoo about taking care to not violate (abuse/infringe) foreigner's human rights. The title of the linked page is 外国人の人権を尊重しましょう (Let's respect foreigner's human rights).

MOJ ad promoting awareness of foreigner's human-rights violations featuring "image characters" 人KENまもる君・人KENあゆみちゃん (human rights Mamoru & human rights Ayumi)
Yahoo-Ad-gaikokujin.gif

The page goes on to detail that as of 2013 over 9.17 million foreigners have immigrated to Japan, showing a long-term increasing trend. This article goes into detail about the kinds of human-rights violations* faced by foreigners living in Japan (resulting from differences in language, religion, culture, and customs).
And, as the 2020 Olympics have been decided for Tokyo, there will be more and more opportunities for coming into contact with foreigners.

Survey - "What kind of human-rights violations do you think foreigners living in Japan currently experience?"
000116439[1].JPG

Perceived human-rights violations are:
Inability to accept differences in customs and common practices = 34.8%
Receiving detrimental treatment finding work/in the workplace = 25.9%
Being refused occupancy in apartments, etc. = 24.9%
Being stared at, or avoided = 15.9%
Experiencing discriminatory language and behavior = 15.0%
Being harassed or bullied at work or school, etc. = 12.9%
Experiencing opposition related to marriage = 12.5%
Being refused entry to stores, or lodging at hotels, etc. = 6.3%
Nothing in particular/don't know = 34.8%

The full article in Japanese is on the Ministry of Justice site.
In the links at the bottom of the article, there is an English page for Human Rights Counseling Offices for Foreigners.

* I have translated 人権侵害 as "human-rights violation" (it can also be human-rights infringement/abuse/issue)

:!:

Wow. Progress.

And on Yahoo, even. Not just limited to the MOJ website.

I realise that such things can be tenuous and transitory, but I'm always hopeful. The upcoming Olympics has triggered a few small improvements, which I hope will snowball to become a wider understanding that goes beyond 2020.

Very nice.

I'm not good with numbers at all...

but...

wikipedia wrote:In 2003, there were about 134,700 non-Latin American Western and 345,500 Latin American expatriates, 274,700 of whom were Brazilians (said to be primarily Japanese descendants, or nikkeijin, along with their spouses),[149] the largest community of Westerners.[151]

Did they includes migrating birds and import cars in their tally ? Or is their and incredible attrition rate among foreigner immigrating to japan ?

(ok, the # for wikipedia are from 2003 versus 2013... but 8.5 million in 10 years... They could have saved all the jews from the holocaust with room to spare for their pets...)

@Coligny: "Immigrants" includes Korean, Chinese, etc.
The Wikipedia quote specifies "Westerners."

Your hunch is indeed correct, the original article says「入国する」, i.e. enter Japan rather than immigrate. Also (pausing to put on the pedantry hat) the figure is for 2012.

How often does that happen to you? The only annoyance I have on that count in recent memory is one guy at work who leaves out the さん when addressing me in Japanese.

Then you should do the same.

Or use ちゃん...

What kills me is when they use Gaspard San...

I try to correct with Gaspard Kun... or Coligny san... or Gaspard de Coligny sama...

But I only get confused/startled doggy faces in return...

Then again, I knew a guy with the family name "Os".

He probably wouldn't like to have the honorific added to his name...

On some redneck forums I like to register as "Ben La Dinde" I think I also have it as a gmail alias...

Literally means " Ben the turkey" practically means instant new friends to invite for a sleepover...

That's the type of shit I mean...the normal courtesies that go out the door "cause gaijin." Dudes I hardly know calling me "magnum" (not that I mind that but it's usually followed by a bunch of other stereotypes) and dudes that know where I'm from still using "gaijin" instead of [cuntry here]jin. On the other end of the spectrum, when Kenji Yamamoto starts asking me to call him "Jaanii"
