Actually, judging by the flying cows this afternoon and the low flying train that just past by my windows I think it's the lower estimations...

pretty sure I also saw a bunch of stray cats flying in V formation toward the local teriaky restaurant for their after hours scraps (sort of tradition here all restaurants have cats plates outside for the strays... that are reaching impressive sizes...)

Finally we got a substantial earthquake here: a 5 in Shikoku.

Felt like a 4 here in the west of Hyogo, but was actually a 3.

Nah, you Kanto boys may be bored, methinks...

Biggest quake we have had in 10 years. Nothing broken, but a few thing fell off the table. Pretty much all the light in the neighborhood went on.

Same here in north-eastern Fukuoka on the coast (S3). Western news is calling it a 6.1 at the epicentre.
It was about the biggest/longest quake I've felt in Japan after the 3/11/2012 (lived in Yokoma then).

Oh shit ... I seriously hope not.

There was a 4 and then a 5 up here in Tohoku just a few days before The Big One, so it's worth being aware that any such shake-ups could be a precursor. But please, no.

This goes for any time, but please make sure you have supplies and a plan. Little things like always topping up the gas tank when it gets down to about half empty (if you drive, obviously) can make a big difference if the poop hits the rotary air pusher. Food, water, battery powered LED lamps and radio, plus batteries of course. Lots to think about.

FWIW, there was a M7.2 / 5弱 on 2011-03-09 (at roughly the same location as the big one), which we felt in Tokyo too...

... followed by a whole series of M4 ~ M6 in the same vicinity, which suddenly stopped at around 7am on 2011-03-11.

Yup, the TV talking heads said it's nothing to do with the Trough of Doom. Doesn't mean it's not a precursor to something else. Or maybe just a gentle reminder not to live too close to the sea, or on/besides/below geologically unstable features, or in the middle of a sea of tinderwood disguised as housing.

Good advice.

This evening I filled the tanks of both my cars, and drove to the local Don Quichotte to buy supplies. Not in Colignian proportions, but I am kind of prepared for the big one (if one can be prepared for that).

Now I need a plan...

Well presumably after your trip to Donki you are well equipped with schoolgirl outfits, "henna gaijin" party face masks, cheap alcohol and exotic gel-like liquids of all kinds, so I'd say the plan involves some serious partying.

I hope it is a grand, and not an upright.

My stocks are vertical AND horizontal. Quantity AND kind...
Like... 20 spray cans of WD40 plus a 1 gallon tank, few kilos of drywall screws. 1 shopping bag full of double side tape for automotive aero body kits. (The 2mm gray foam superstrong). 5 spray paint cans gunmetal. 14 kilos of cat litter. 10 2mm 4 flutes HSS endmills, 5 replacememt tips for 40w soldering iron. 18 rolls of coreless toilet paper roll (1 roll is good for 3 weeks), 4 vacuum cleaners, 2 spare 800w computer PSUs...
And you should see my stock of spare jigsaw blades...
Plus the normal stuff...

(I think I have a serious hoarding problem...)

It is a grand, but not so sure I want to take shelter under that. Imagine its legs giving away, and then see the headlines in the Japan Times:

Family of four crushed under Grand Piano: Guinea Pig survives ordeal
