This evening I filled the tanks of both my cars, and drove to the local Don Quichotte to buy supplies. Not in Colignian proportions, but I am kind of prepared for the big one (if one can be prepared for that).

Now I need a plan...

My stocks are vertical AND horizontal. Quantity AND kind...
Like... 20 spray cans of WD40 plus a 1 gallon tank, few kilos of drywall screws. 1 shopping bag full of double side tape for automotive aero body kits. (The 2mm gray foam superstrong). 5 spray paint cans gunmetal. 14 kilos of cat litter. 10 2mm 4 flutes HSS endmills, 5 replacememt tips for 40w soldering iron. 18 rolls of coreless toilet paper roll (1 roll is good for 3 weeks), 4 vacuum cleaners, 2 spare 800w computer PSUs...
And you should see my stock of spare jigsaw blades...
Plus the normal stuff...

(I think I have a serious hoarding problem...)

You might be interested but I picked up a dozen or so 40cm chem lights at the 100yen shop. Pretty good deal I thought. Threw some in the vehicles and a few here and there around the house. I have a few flash lights but kids play with them so when the power goes out there isn't always juice left in them.

Yes, got some. Not trusting the 100y shop version much though... For the home stock it's ok, for the Bug Out Bags I buy the more expensive one from hiking shops.

If your car is close to the house, this might be better:

Plus idling cars are more silent than power generators. And this king of setup might trigger less jealousy/problems with the neighbours in case of crisis.
My car have a fuel flow of 1l/hour at idle (and I have a real time OBDII gauge to tell me the variation), so it's easy to know how long you can use it before running dry on fuel.
And after you can progressively buy deep discharge batteries and 12v solar panels to make the installation more self sufficient.

Whoops!

Thanks for reminding me.

Hadn't run the generator since December. But it fired up fine and will now run for 15 minutes or so just to keep everything running smoothly. Supposed to do that once a month (naughty bad me).

I'm really torn over this. "Expert opinion" seems to be divided about 50/50 as to whether fuel stabilizers are a good idea or not. I would never use one in a car, but it might be helpful in a small engine like a generator. Still can't decide.

So, this thing is directly connected to the terminals of the car battery, I assume? 1800 W / 12 V = 150 A. Looks very convenient in times of emergency. Don't want to buy a generator.

It's a standard 12v to 100v converter... Just a bigger version, it got 2 batteries input in the back. Also check the capacity of your alternator. With a small nissan you might not want to use it to full power.

Other option, buy a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV they come with 1500w plug in the trunk. (Some Totoya hybrid do that too)

Tsunami warning after 8.0 quake strikes off Chile

An earthquake of 8.0 magnitude has struck off Chile's coast near Iquique, triggering a tsunami warning for all of Latin America's Pacific coast, the US Geological Survey says.

It said the quake was very shallow, only 10km below the seabed, which would have made it feel stronger.

It was centred 86km (56 miles) north-west of the mining area of Iquique.

The USGS said a quake of this force had the power to generate a "destructive tsunami" for coastlines.

Tsunami may or may not be making landfall early tomorrow morning, so you might want to hold back on those dawn walks on the beach tetrapods.

For comparison, the last one sent over from our tectonically-plagued amigos in 2010:

Googling the post 3-11 landscape of the area shows that with the exception of the building where the photographer was shooting from, pretty much nothing is left of the town except the pier. I wonder whether complacency caused a lot of deaths here or if the people correctly considered it a harbinger of just how bad the tsunami could be.

That's not paint. It's people pissing themselves.

BTW, a few little 20~30 cm tsunami waves have been recorded up here thus far.
That'll be about the size of it, I reckon.
