Using Google Maps to track racism in Japan

Activists in Japan are using a novel way to tackle racism.

They're using Google Maps to pinpoint xenophobic graffiti in Shin-Okubo, a part of Tokyo with a large ethnic Korean community.

As we reported on our radio programme, Google Maps is being used to highlight the rise of the "netouyo" or online nationalists.

Anne-Marie Tomchak of #BBCtrending reports on the social media drive against racism in Japan.

Ehhh, if you never noticed the passive aggressive type racism here, you're missing a large chunk of the picture. Most of the real racist shit talk about FG isn't exactly on display for FG. Gaijin this and gaijin that talks are even more bewildering when they forget you're one of them FG they're talking about...cept "you're not like other FG" or "we don't like FG but you're ok" comes into play.

Yea your right, I guess I've just been here long enough that I suffer from mild Stockholm Syndrome. Desensitized enough that unless they say JAPUNASE ONNY it doesn't even blip my radar. I have mentioned the "Oh yea you're a gaijin, but you don't count" on here somewhere on FG. I still find the racial crap to be pretty brazen though.

I'm sure we all are used to it...not exactly a good thing...but then it doesn't help to be oversensitive or get a case of "because gaijin!" paranoia.

Even when they do, I still get the pass, but that isn't really the problem.

BTW, the biggest problem with racism in Japan always invvoles Americans, usually named David, usually black military in Okinawa. It's your thing, not anybody else's. I'm not saying you're not right, but to First Worlders it's a trivial issue. They don't do it much, and it's nothing like an entrenched thing. And it isn't Stockholm Syndrome (nice pull, though). It's called not being an Americvnt twat and transporting your home schooled BS to another country. You guys (esp. you good ones, like you 2) need to realise that shiite none of the rest of us cared about anyways doesn't matter that much.

You guys invented the racist nation, after all. And if it helps, I consider some of you First Worlders, but certainly not the states itself. Entrenched BS primitivism is hardly a basis for development.

Choko, the soccer boys are no better. But it's usually inocuous, and it's usually just stupidity, if not actual ignorance. FTR, I always point out they mean Me. Then the apologies start, as we know, and I don't allow those either. OTOH, we have teammates that have lived in Japan for 20 years and sound like tourists. If they weren't friends, I'd beat them until they packed up and moved home.

I guess the difference is the whole anti-racism movement within countries like the US and Canada came from within....Japan, Korea, etc. are being pressured by what other modern countries (who have already begun the process, have larger foreign/minority populations, etc.) have developed....and we all know how well this place reacts to outside pressure that goes against what "we Japanese" have in place.

Really I think what gets under my skin is just people not wanting to be realistic on any side of the spectrum. People want to be proud to a point where there is no self reflection and refuse to hear criticism (constructive or otherwise) so they can fixate their issues on any other party. But in the end I am about not telling anyone what to do. And I have said this before but if japan wants to be an empire again and "japan for the japanese" fine I'm not gonna argue with them, I'll move. (Hopefully before I get put in an gaijin internment camp) But that ideology didn't work out so well for them the last time now did it? History repeats ad infinitum.

To put it mildly. It brought unbelievable amounts of death, pain and suffering on the Japanese people. What makes it other people's business is that it also brought a vast amount of death, pain and suffering on other peoples. That won't just be forgotten, but it can and should be forgiven. The really damaging thing about denial is that it makes forgiveness impossible.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Exactly, because the premise of denial is that there's nothing to forgive.

Bullheaded denial to evade responsibility now is cowardly and stupid in the extreme. The truth will out, and the shame will eventually be visited on future generations (forgiveness notwithstanding). Forensic science and other means of investigation are advancing all the time and will eventually provide unequivocal proof, whether anyone who experienced the events in question in real time is alive or not.

False pride backed by denial is a truly inglorious, hollow legacy to foist on future generations.

And really that's the other side of the coin. The people themselves tacitly (or otherwise) agreed to what the leadership was doing. So the people themselves who suffered can't be absolved of all guilt. This is why I kind of smile a bit when I see the public itself rising against the "korean go home" etc. protestors. They are not giving their consent by silence. They are raising vocal opposition.

Do they realise that that flag is actually the Nazi version of the state flag of Germany? Patriots they may claim to be but parading the defunct state flag of another country is hardly consistent with that posture.

Wage Slave,

I am going to assume you're being rhetoramical. Look at those dudes crossing the street under guard in the photo you linked. They look like poster boys for the Bizarro World Special Olympics Sunshine Variety Bus and Freak Show Extravaganza.

Not to mention this nice young Toshi-Bo in the replica uniform in the photo BiginJapan linked on page 5.

Bi1gmAFCEAAj3Fa.jpg

C'mon Toshi, Cammon!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just because:

I have always wondered how people with such a decidedly unmilitary body type are able to find surplus or replica uniforms. Can you imagine how long a doughface like that would last before he became his own barracks' comfort 'woman'????

At any rate, Choko, you seem to be mistaking the cowardice of masked anonymity with the courage to freely express one's convictions and the freedom of speech. Work on that, wooodya!!???

If these boys weren't such harbingers of hate I would find them rather adorable. It looks like a Nazified Audio-Visual Club outing to my 70s raised eyes. Now, back to the rhetorimacals: do they know that the foreigners they are trying to deprive of public monies pay the same taxes that support their lazy inbred Hi-yatoi asses?

On a tangent, has anybody ever caught their less than PC Jpn friends playing Spot the Korean in an unguarded moment? That can get really absurd really quickly.

Despite claims that "we can tell!!" by almost all of them, most are clueless when it comes to a non-Japanese Asian in their midst unless it's completely obvious (clothes, language, etc.) I've seen a few of them finger other Japanese as Chinese, Thai, etc. only to get shot down  The best was this christmas party a few years back when I mentioned their friend "Mika" looked just like my Korean friend Susan. I got "noooo way! Mika's from Osaka!! She's Japaneeeeeeze!!" from two of my friends....only to have Mika say, "Well, yeah, I'm Japanese but my parents immigrated from Korea." Disbelief and へーーーーー filled the room and they still couldn't believe it cause "she looks Japaneeeeze!"

Chokonen,

Yup. This is what of which we speaketh. I do like the sense of enlightened disappointment on the faces of the good ones. It really is drilled into them in so many ways all the way from teat to peat. Sort of adorably sad in a gentle forehead smacking way.

It's that weird phrenology/physiognomy (???) thing they're still so big on. That mask faced TV witch Hosokawa loves that crap. I do okay because I have a round skull and a symmetrical and not completely repulsive face.

And I still claim I can spot an Englander at 12 paces, and a fellow North American at 20. It's all in the Jizz, you see. Tee hee hee. Often have to talk to them to figger out if they're with me or you, mind.

Coligny,

Buwahahaha. It is funny how so many 4Fs dig military memorabilia. Sad, too. Nice mask, though.

Not even... Unlike what SDH think, not all French are obsessed by Djouzes...

Outfit: discount rain/winter jumpsuit at the hardware store, to work on the car in cold days without freezing to death, plenty pockets.

Mask: stupid free gift when I ordered a Russian KV1 MBT from an airsoft store. (the tank had an airsoft turret gun hence the link)

Hen Long, not the good Tamiya stuff, was to make an M88 Hercules, but the track/drivetrain are way to different, only the chassis length was perfect...
