Tokyo is Number 1!

Postby yanpa » Wed Mar 26, 2014 9:29 am

Teh Grauniad, reporting Swiss Re, wrote:Earthquakes, hurricanes, cyclones and tsunamis: the world's 10 riskiest cities

1) Tokyo-Yokohama, Japan: With 37 million inhabitants living under the threat of earthquakes, monsoons, river floods and tsunami, the Tokyo-Yokohama region is by far the riskiest in the world: an estimated 80% of Tokyoites, or 29 million, are potentially exposed at any one time to a very large earthquake. Japan is also the country most exposed to tsunami risk, as the country’s urban centres are dotted with an almost perverse accuracy along the Ring of Fire, the active faults of the western Pacific. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 devastated both Tokyo and Yokohama, killing an estimated 142,800 people.

...more...

Strengthening Japan's awesome position, Osaka-Kobe comes in at number 4 while Nagoya ranks at number 6.

Fallujah and Beyrut are asking for a recount...

Also... Nagoya... Tsunami... Maybe, but with the Ise and Mikawa bay acting as expansion buffers I'd really want to see a simulation before hopping for gloom and doom upon that shithole...

Another internet opinion. The world's riskiest city is not Tokyo. It is Naples, Italy. While you can to an extent protect yourself from earthquakes and tsunamis, and even if the worst does happen, rebuilding is an option, living atop an active caldera doesn't provide you with those kinds of choices.

Remind me, why did I move here from Berlin, which is:

* not at risk of flooding or tsunamis
* no seismic activity of any kind
* no volcanos
* no extreme weather
* nice flat stable ground, no risk of landslides etc.

Going by historical records, there is a theoretical risk of destruction as a direct consequence of initiating a major war, and the possibility of death or injury resulting from munitions left over from that period, but then that's not so much different to Tokyo.
