Hell no, lot's of company "presidents" in Tokyo with nothing but a post office account, $20 web site and a line of bullshit that the average greenhorn would find mesmerizing.

Yea, fair enuff, eh!????
It all makes Kyoto sound rather pleasant. It was the internecine competitive crap that got me, but at least in Kyoto everybody had a proper teaching job.............having 45 universties or whatever it is.

Delightfully few Shachos. And the ones we had were either good, or sufficiently comical.

You guys Up There laugh at that type too, right!!?? pleez say yes..........................

Cut him some slack: Garin trained as a pastrychef, and I think they are taught how to do spelling errors on birthday cakes.

The most common gaijin grifter/bail-out story (albeit small-time) I have encountered over the years is, "my grandmother died".
20 years ago when I taught English, I even lent 50,000 yen (for airfare) to a fellow English teacher "friend" to attend grandma's funeral back home. Never heard from him, but he did leave a note of apology with his roommate for what it's worth. He took the English school boss for another 150,000 yen so I shouldn't feel that bad, I guess.
I've lost count of people that have used the dead grandma story as an excuse to change jobs, or bail and leave Japan.

If the 'friend' had repaid you it would have been alright in my book. I honestly don't think those sorts of midnight runs fit the same profile as the idiot in this story running off leaving people incredibly worried and stressed, wasting resources and time.

I actually think midnight runs serve a purpose if they're done in the way to minimise harm - no 'borrowing' of money w/out repayment etc. Having gone thru the mill of many eikaiwa and hagwon (Korean English schools) in my time, I can well understand why Engrish teachers just opt out when their employer is being a fuckwit and arsehole and when the school environment sucks deepfried dogs' balls.

Some yrs ago in Japan I had to gaman a Japanese manage who spoke good English bitching about a fellow Engrish teacher who didn't come back from their home country although they sent an apologetic email citing an emergency. I though 'stiff shit', for a start the gaijin had done some weeks of work before payday so they didn't get paid for nearly a month of work as they left before they were paid. Their classes were two days a week at most, fill-in teachers were easily found including myself.

And I have always maintained that you've gotta be ready to walk (or run) in Engrish teaching if the boss or manager or school or students overstep some boundaries of fuckery or do certain things. My own fuckwit of a boss came very close to meeting the criteria until I decided it was in my own interests to continue. But I honestly think you have to put yourself first in the Engrish industry in Asia. So much fuckery and cheating in small ways as well as at times big goes on in Asia including Japan where the eikaiwa industry is really starting to scrap the bottom of the barrel re the 'quality' of all the small schools that have sprung up since the death of Nova etc.

Somebody does a midnight run or walks out - if the boss or staff or school or students are shitty, too fucking bad. If the owner doesn't want to pay for fill in teachers then they're a tightwad and a lot of the time they should have thought of all this before they started cheating their employees, having shitty conditions to work in, being a rude arsehole to get back at gaijin and waygugs etc. Fuck em, do your thing.

Is he the idjit sat in the road offering money in the early part of that?

I was under the impression that this year's harvest went off rather quietly. I wonder what Jocko was doing arriving after the party?

Has anybody heard of a group dedicated to protecting those poor dolphin hunters from the savage ravages of fat white cultural imperialism? I just thought of a great name, slogan and flag.

He's spazzing out pretty good on his FB page; apparently all of his illegal activities are proof that he is doing the right thing. :?:  He seems to be that most intolerable of sorts: a mawkish emotardic Brit. WTF happened to the old stiff upper lip detachment!!?????

But he did admit in writing to being a racist, even though in his convoluted mind it's a good thing to be.

It would actually be nice not to see the most openly racist First World country cry Racism!!, esp. when charges of ethnocentrism or cultural imperialism are more appropriate.

PS Am I alone in finding it almost comical how much attention is being paid to and money being spent on such a trivial issue? It's just a few smart fish, there's plenty of them anyways, and way too many emotionally underdeveloped nimrods are getting far too agitated about this, rather than the slaughter in the Congo.

I think I got me a new research project. I've been getting itchy lately, so it could be a perfect match.

Anybody familiar with the mechanics of government research grants care to comment on the feasibility???

I am thinking of it as a sort of Contrarian Advocacy Anthropology, and it melds beuatifully with my research record: the preservation of tradition as an engine of local socioeconomic (re)development. Tied in with a healthy amount of anti-imperialist dogma and gratuitous slagging of fat white pedants.

An Ideal Marriage, me thinks.

Also, just to reiterate, I consider the slaughter of any being of higher sentience to be a woeful thing, but not as woeful as imperialism.

Is he a Brit though? I think that BBC reporter claim is a mite dubious to say the least and his supporters are lined up to harrass the US embassy rather than the UK's.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

If you're deported or denied entry to a country, the normal immigration policy is to send you (via a one-way ticket at the soonest possible time and ideally a non-stop flight -- which tends to be expensive *) to a country they know you're a citizen of. In other words, where you have "right of abode". Even if you no longer have real ties to it or it's not the flight/country you just came from -- those countries' immigration change their minds about recent foreign visitors when they discover another country had second thoughts about admitting them.

They do this to prevent "rejection boomerang/ricochet"... where a foreign country goes "why should we admit your unwelcome guests?" and sends them back to the country trying to exclude them (or to another third country).

Since his final destination that JP immi sent him to appears to be Seattle according to his FB posts, it suggests he holds U.S. nationality.

* when they can't tell for certain what citizenship a person is, or they have no money that they can't chip in even a little for the flight, if the country is rogue and they don't let their own nationals in the country, when you appeal and appeal and appeal you right to stay via bureaucratic process, or when they raise such a tantrum/hysterics on the post 9/11 commercial flight that they present a worry/bother to the other paying passengers... that's how you end up in immigration detention for a long time.

Here's hoping. And that also means Kuro is wrong about it being Imperialism becuz as every fule no the USA doesn't do Empire or anything like that.

The levity of that aside I think it is something far more pervasive and universal than Imperialism. It's more a gut instinct far too many people have to participate in a kind of interfering moral authoritarianism. That determination that because I don't like what you are doing then I have some sort of right and even duty to prevent you from doing it by any means at my disposal.

What is done in Taiji is deeply distasteful - Even the people doing it recognise that by putting up screens so they can't be seen or filmed doing it. However, turning that into an overriding moral issue is even worse. People do all sorts of things I don't like but that is just tough - Unless there really is fundamental moral issue at stake, then I have no right to do anything other than deplore it.

The guy's film isn't anything very controversial, new or special. It is just pretty simplistic, woolly and one sided.

Major twattage from about 2:40 in this video:

especially the young lady at 3:53 with a terribly condescending "I like this one" taking pictures of the documentary cameraperson.

And 12:02 - "It's fun".

Not that I'm all pro-dolphin-slaughter or anything, but this is a pretty damn infantile way of going about protesting.

Yes, and why I choose to dislike them more than some honest fisherfolk making an honest living doing something I honestly dislike. The white people in that video were appalling. I would have slapped them out of town had I been there. They certainly deserve a Name and Shame gauntlet. They behaved like they were at a Monkey park gawking at the display treats.

Wage Slave,
Well put, all that. A nice vernacular encapsulation of what I mean by Culchural Imperialism, my misuse of it in relation to the US aside................. .

The shocking presumption and bald-faced hypocrisy are simply too ripe to not pick. And I believe hypocrisy a ludicrously trivial sin most of the time.

FYI, DJ Jazzy MS seems to be a Scottish Birdsong Sound Recordist ( ??) living in Seattle. I suppose Sound Recorder does make him sound like a machine, though his mawkishly hysterical emocentrism suggests otherwise. He's pulling quite a little Gaijin Goolag hissy fit on FB.

Former Batavia Man Missing in the Mountains of Japan
Search-and-rescue teams looking for Michael Blodgett

stcharles-il.patch.com / ABC 7 News, March 29, 2014
Mike Blodgett, a former Batavia <Illinois USA> man who has family ties to Batavia and Montgomery, has gone missing in the mountains of Japan, according to reports from his family.
Blodgett, 35, went camping near Dorogawa in March 23 with plans to hike into the mountains to visit the Omine Temple before spending a night on the top of the mountain on March 24, according to an e-mail from his wife, Ikuchan Blodgett.
The family said it's unclear if he ended up staying in the mountains. He was expected in the Yoshino area on March 25 before returning home on March 26.
"He did this course before,"Ikuchan Blodgett wrote in the e-mail. "When he did it, he did all the hiking in a day."
Blodgett, an English teacher in Osaka, was expected back to teach between 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 26 but did not return, according to his wife.

I used to "hike" at night occasionally when living in more northern locales. Basically the shortcut home from the bar was over a small mountain. Wild boar and big sparrow wasps be damned. Oh yeah, and those big ass fuck off spiders. Centipedes. Squirrels. Miracle I'm still here. Oh right, no company funds to raid...

I've had a couple of my worst scares in the mountains in Nara, they are hairy in spots. Reasons like this is exactly why I email my wife periodic route updates from the GPS app I use, also why I carry a paper map if there is one of the area and an analog compass and know how to use them, seems like either of these could have got him home sooner.

UPDATE: Former Batavia Man Found After Six Days in Japan Mountains
IL Patch | batavia.patch.com
...
"Just got word, Mike is ALIVE!!!" His wife reported Mike was physically weak but his mind is clear. He had some frostbite on his toes and fingers and was dehydrated, according to the Facebook update.
More details were posted later Sunday morning explaining what happened during Blodgett's trek into the mountains. Blodgett ran into trouble while descending the mountain on March 24.
He slipped 160 to 230 feet, tried to find his way but slipped again — "this time for a long time" — and also lost his phone, according to the Facebook page. He then slipped into a river/waterfall, was soaking wet before he eventually found a small, old, abandoned shack where he spent six nights.
"There weren't any trails around this shack and but still he tried to find a trail," according to a Sunday Facebook post. "Don't know which day, maybe today, but he went down and found a river so walked along the river but then he came to a point where he could not pass so had to go back. He tried another way but was snowy."
Blodgett said Saturday was the hardest day as he descended the mountain and got to a home at the foothill mountains where he called for help, according to the Find Michael Blodgett Facebook page...
...
The family is unclear if he ended up staying in the mountains. He was expected in the Yoshino area on March 25 before returning home on March 26.
"He did this course before,"Ikuchan Blodgett wrote in the e-mail. "When he did it, he did all the hiking in a day."
