Obviously these folks don't sail well. NHK 11pm news said 7 people are still "missing" and one boy took two hours to swim to shore.

Yacht overturns, 12 people thrown into Lake Biwa

OTSU, Japan Sept. 15 (22:00) Kyodo -
A yacht overturned in Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture on Monday, throwing 12 people, including five children, into the water, police said.
The yacht rolled over at around 6 p.m., off the shore of Kitahama in the town of Shiga, the police said. One person managed to swim to the shore, according to the police. There were no immediate reports on the other 11.

PS: Here in Japan I hang at Hayama Marina---sail when I can smile my way onto a boat, otherwise I mostly sea kayak.

for a series of pics on what probably happened to the poor buggers on Biwa. What were they doing with 12 on the boat (can't be licenced for more than 10 unless it's over 28' and shouldn't be possible to turn over if it's any bigger than that. Not in today's winds that is...) and how come they hadn't put life jackets on the kids at least?

Hope they find them soon...

As for the web site praise, thanks. Not quite up and running yet but will be soon, I hope. It's one of several I have... peruse this one for my boat

Hayama Marina sounds familiar... you run into a fella called Brian up your way?

Drop me a line if you're ever in Kansai and itching for a sail

Japslapper (great name)
there's quite a competetive sailing community up here in Osaka. Plenty of Gin Palaces too, of course, but the bursting of the bubble has cut those numbers down. Made for some great deals to be had too:)

Could probably find you a doer upper if you wanted...

NHK TV says this (Tuesday) morning that only 7 people were supposed to be on the boat and that no surviors have been found.

The BIG story is that the 10 year old swam to shore ...over 2km. He was reported of to have said his arms were "tired" so my quess is that he had a life jacket on. Dang 2 hours in Lake Biwa can be real cold. So cold and deep that the bodies will stink not float.

7 missing in Lake Biwa after yacht capsizes
MDN / Aug 16
OTSU --

Seven people, including some children, remain missing Monday after a yacht carrying them capsized in Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, police said.

A 42-year-old man who was aboard the yacht, the Falcon, which is owned by 47-year-old Yoshitada Kawashima, swam to the shore and raised the alarm shortly before 6 p.m. at the Shiga Yacht Club in the town of Shiga.

A 6-year-old boy also managed to reach the shore by himself, while rescue workers plucked out another man from the waters at about 8 p.m., followed by two more people about an hour later. Identities of the people involved are not immediately known.

There were 12 people on the boat although it reportedly had a capacity to carry only 8 members.

Authorities said the 7-meter Falcon overturned in Japan's largest lake about two to three kilometers from the shore.

Bah! Curses. If it wasn't so un-piratey, I'd be saying "sorry" that no-one could board me trusty site these last 24hrs, blood's teeth! Stupendous corruption of the Main disk and numbers 2 and 3 in the raid were taken out by a hail of lead and powder (wiped out the whole forum history and everything else too) She sank with all hands and left nary a trace.

Ifn I catch the hawser lickin' dog that no doubt has a belaying pin in his britches where the one eyed trouser snake should be, I'll break 'is bloody ankles and swamp him out with the galley slops for the sharks to knaw on a while.

Gor blimey. Does make you feel better don' it.

Site's mostly back up but will be a a bit bland for a couple of days.

<<So are three persons still missing??? Isn't Lake Biwa deep and cold and so the bodies won't float for a long time, right Captain Crip?>>>

Pirates beaten off with sonic weapon

Image

SMH wrote:The crew of a luxury cruise ship used a sonic weapon that blasts earsplitting noise in a directed beam, against pirates off the Somalian coast this weekend, the cruise line said today.

The Seabourn Spirit was carrying hundreds of people ... when pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine-guns at they tried to board.

The ship was about 160 km off the coast of Somalia at the time.

The ship had a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, installed as a part of its defence systems, said Bruce Good, a spokesman for Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corp.

The LRAD is a "non-lethal weapon" developed for the US military after the 2000 attack on the USS Cole off Yemen as a way to keep operators of small boats from approaching US warships.

... The military version of the weapon is a 45-20 kg dish-shaped device that can direct a high-pitched, piercing tone with a tight beam. Neither the LRAD's operators or others in the immediate area are affected.

Makers of the LRAD compare its shrill tone to that of smoke detectors, only much louder. It can be as loud as about 150 decibels, while smoke alarms are about 80 to 90 decibels . . . more

I want one of these installed in my car and activated by the horn - but a short range one ("SRAD") - for those drivers who cross me.

I hope it's smaller than the old version I had ...

Turns out a dude living a couple of hundred meters away owns a yacht and needed experienced crew.

Had a fun morning. That was long ago, holding a tiller. Nice guy too.
