Japanese Tv shows.

Postby robnjit » Tue Nov 11, 2003 6:24 am

Hello everyone. This is my first post so i will describe myself a bit and ask a question.

name: robnjit
nationality: Peruvian-American
Location: NYC
* Will be going to live(2 weeks) with a friend in tokyo in june 2004 ^_^ *

Like many other americans. I started of watching anime. But know i moved onto looking at japanese movies ranging from the classics like Zatoichi, seven samurai, etc to seeing new movies like ringu, tomie, Kakashi, audition, etc etc....

I am also learning Japanese via Audiotapes(Pimsleur) which are very good.

I also into Japanese Tv shows: Beautiful life, Happy Family Plan.

This leads me to my question. There are so many tv shows but i am not sure which are the good ones. Any recommendations on English based Japanese tv show reviews sites?

or

Can anyone recommened any good japanese tv shows that are airing now?

Thank you in advance.

The good ones are the ones you like. :)

Or did you mean "good" as in "well-liked in Japan?"

WARNING ! WARNING !
JAPANESE TV
WILL MELT
YOUR BRAIN

Just look what happened to the FG's own TV star, Rob Pongi from too much Japanese TV  Image

Read "Televiews " by Wm. Penn which is in The Daily Yomiuri on Thursdays about what is hot in Japan and what a gaijin viewer might like. There are some J-Pop forum-type sites that cover TV but I never have taken the effort examine them 'cause they are even sicker perv fan-boys than me.
And like Causty said, "Welcome aboard!"

Well spotted BB! Yes, she is one of my assistants that has time-traveled back to 21st Century Japan.

My husband and I decided that Japanese TV was bad for us, too much about food and onsen, so we ended up just unplugging it.

Gotta agree with that. Most of the shows I watch are either western movie re-runs, (If I watch Lethal Weapon one more time I'm gonna puke) or shows like Sekkai no Marumie where they just show segments of foreign shows. Occasionally there are some decent movies, light comedy and stuff, but don't hold your breath. Let's not even start with those Chambara shows...

Aaaarrrrggghhh...

Come to think of it, the only places I watch TV are in the lunchroom at work or inside the sauna at the sento.

Welcome aboard Robnjit.

Trick looks like was filmed with someone's five year old camcorder. The story seems weird, but I had a hard time getting over how amateur it looked...

Well, it's 1/2 intentional, 1/2 "art", and pure Japanese.
"Staging" and "posing" is very unnatural in all Japanese drama (think digital kabuki).

Problem is that no subs have been released yet.
On the crappy video style, it seems it's indeed very popular in tv produced movie. For example Kyoshi Kurosawa's Kourei and the original Ju-on movies were shot with the same kind of equipment.

Let's Blame-the-French :-)

"SAY WOT? USE A TRIPOD? USING A TRIPOD IS LIKE USING A CONDOM...."

Hey, let's Blame-the-French for cinema verte! :)

Trick uses a mish-mash of documentary, Twin-Peaks like manipulation, and cinema verte techniques. There are no subs for Trick because its humor (like David Lynch's Twin Peaks) does not translate well and sub for it would take a lot more effort than the subtitle-otaku community wants to do.

GTO

Postby Andocrates » Wed Nov 12, 2003 3:09 pm

GTO live drama is really good, it sticks to the anime but it's better.

Some drama is easy to follow while learning Japanese and this is one of them. (BTW it's english subbed) You will hear words you learned used in context and it kind of glues them in your head.

Also, in NYC there are many sources to buy and rent Japanese drama, but no subs. I seem to remember a rental place in the supermarket next to kinokuniya in Edgewater NJ. You can also buy a Japan rail pass, get a real bento lunch (you will wonder how they make rice taste so good and discover the maji that is bonito) and some cheap plane tickets. Not to mention Kinokuniya is the best place to buy study materials in America. (hint) the hentai is on the end of the manga counter)

If you head over to the JAPANTOWN area of Manhattan, anywhere from 41stw-49w/broadway/ ave of americas, you can find a few places that sell or rent semi current Japanese videos. also saw a place down around the village, but not sure if its there still there. good luck in your fight to master the Nihongo.

ultraEDIT: Thread Locked. How many times do you guys need to be asked not to discuss piracy on FG? There are plenty of other sites for that type of discussion.

If you think you can manage to discuss TV shows without talking about illegal downloads, feel free to start another thread.
