Strange Note

When I left Japan many years ago, I got lots of good bye notes from students - all of the good except for one that was very strange. I can read the first line, but not the words in the second line. Any ideas?

"I'm interested in extermination(?) animals"
"Please you study ......... (maori?) (New Zealans)

As to what it means, I have no idea!

I'm guessing "extinct" is the word meant (not the first time I've heard that particular mixup), and via Whackypedia's List of extinct animals of New Zealand I present Haast's Eagle (posh name Harpagornis moorei).

So, I suggest getting up to speed on what is reported to have been "the largest eagle known to have existed" and report back to your ex-student.

Well done! Makes much more sense now. I was thinking he wanted to exterminate animals, maybe was into hunting I thought.
