Uh, I wrote this before there was anything to link to--I was writing it as I heard it off the TV. Tell me how to link to that and I'll do it.

This news is hitting the J-fan like a pile of unchi about now.
Some signing event in Iwate, some nut attacked the girls with a knife. The TBS News at 6 is bithering all about it now---but nothing reported in engrish yet
Hijinx wrote:Yes, how about it? Must have missed that in the forum rules I didn't bother to read.

AKB48 members injured by saw-wielding man in Iwate
THE ASAHI SHIMBUN -- May 25, 2014
MORIOKA--A saw-wielding man injured two members of the popular idol girls group AKB48 and a man believed to be a staff member on May 25 at an event to greet fans in Iwate Prefecture, police and other sources said.
One of the two injured AKB48 members is Rina Kawaei, 19. The name of the other member was not immediately available, they said.
Police apprehended the 24-year-old assailant...
...The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Iwate Sangyo Bunka Center (Iwate industry and culture center), named Apio, in Takizawa in the central part of the prefecture.
The three injured people were immediately transported to a hospital by ambulance. Their injuries are not life-threatening...

...The man was identified as Satoru Umeta, 24, unemployed, from Towada in neighboring Aomori, the police said. He allegedly assaulted the young performers with a saw, prompting an emergency call that a man with a blade was acting violently in the event hall.
The fan event was got underway in the city of Takizawa at 1 p.m., according to the pop group’s website. The attendees are said to have included Minami Takahashi, one of the group’s most popular members.
It is not known why he attacked the group or whether the two dancers were specifically targeted.
Kawaei’s right thumb was cut and fractured as was Iriyama’s right little finger, the management office said, noting they were taken to a hospital and underwent surgery. They also got cuts on their heads, the police said. The male staffer suffered cuts to his left hand...

Seriously. Relatively minor injuries, and this is world news?
WTF is going on?
wagyl wrote:It is a good sign, Hammer: the world is relatively calm. If there was anything really important happening in the world, this wouldn't get reported.

Again... not sharing the optimism here... Not like if there was not a coup in Ukraine, Thailand, anti Chinese riots in Hanoi and Saigon certainly with the blessing of Moscow, this just on top of my head...

None of them score on factors 1, 2 or 3. And certain opinion is that the Thai issue doesn't score on factor 4 either, but that is one of the things that give it a particularly poor score on factor 3.

(I once read a neat summary of the four elements which make something newsworthy. Sadly, for all my searching I can no longer find it, so I am paraphrasing but it went something like this:
1. It involves rich people or famous people.
2. It involves a rich country.
3. It can be explained simply, especially if you can blame someone.
4. It is tragic.
This one ticks all the boxes. It is even better than a royal wedding!)
