‘Sh-t Black’ elephant feces beer a hit in Japan
rawstory.com | 2013/04/20
...
Un, Kono Kuro was an instant sellout online for the Sankt Gallen brewery... the coffee beens used to make it were taken from elephant excrement, as part of a partnership with the Golden Triangle Elephant Foundation, an organization that provides street rescues for stray elephants...

I had to check if Kirin's Fartland was even beer (and not happoshu).
Rocketnews24.com published a taste test of the elephant poop beer on April 6th and reported that it, "is some good shit."

Looking through to the pics of the label posted on the rocketnews site, this coffee-which-has-been-massaged-by-pachydermal-intestines flavoured beer is in fact a happoshu. :-x

Ahh yes, prize for esoteric beer knowledge goes to SDH. English language wikipedia just mentions percentage of fermentable ingredients, but Japanese language confirms that spice beers and fruit beers are happoshu no matter what the malt percentage.

For a while there I thought you must have been talking about your fizzy shits. You know, you really should see someone about that.

You flatter...it was a lucky guess based on the premise that all happoshu tastes like shit. (Cue in opportunity for someone to post that Divine clip again....I'd never seen it before and seriously retched when I did. Was surprised to see Divine did, too. Must have had some serious shit going on his mind to crave attention and acceptance to that extent. Death at such a comparatively young age must have come as a relief.)

According to the tv news, Suntory Goku Zero has been tested, and found to be more than dai-san. It will henceforth be an exalted happoshu, and cost about 20 yen more per 350mL can. Suntory can look forward to paying an extra 116 billion in alcohol tax.

Might be Sapporo Brewery, not Suntory's product.

According to the important notice in the site you linked, it looks like they did a reformulation, and have halted production of the "No. 1 category fizzy liqueur" and will put a happoshu with the same brand on sale from 15 July.

All these near beers and pretty damn far beers give me a headache anyway so the news did not register with me. However, I get the feeling that it might be as a result of product development by the manufacturer (I hesitate to call them a brewer) rather than testing of an existing product and consequent reclassification.

Yeah, that's it. And 11.6 bil in additional tax, not 116.

I actually avoid happoshu etc. even when it is free. The after effects are just not worth any "nommunication."

It seems the Japanese brewers are catching on. Have you seen Sapporo's White Belg happosei? I tried it out of curiosity because a colleague of mine said it was actually decent and while it's not good it's certainly better than other types of happosei or happoshu. I guess to be fair I should mention I'm not a big fan of Belgian whites in general as I find them to be too sweet which was the main problem I had with White Belg. Maybe people who are into them wouldn't mind it. Especially not at 133 yen a can.

And you have nailed the point. Japan is officially a US style country. WTF expects to pay less than $2 a bottle for a beer in a properly First World country????? Plebs drink cheap stuff. People that have opinions that matter don't.

Otoh, if you can't enjoy a nice standard issue Japanese lager, your a beer fag. Loosersssssssssssssssssssss :biggrin2:

Your colleague's beer taste sucks---like that Sapporo crap (I had the misfortune to try it as well). This is much better for the same style made by a J-brewery: Suiyoubi No Neko

He's Japanese and buys cheap "beer" by the case from Costco so I should have known better but I figured it was worth a shot. I don't drink beer that much these days anyway. I'm more a shochu and whiskey guy. Besides, like I said, I don't like white beer than much anyway. I'd rather have a regular Japanese lager or an IPA if I'm going the craft beer route.

Inspired by SJ's post I just tried a can of the Belg. It's... OK, especially for the price, though I'm not a fan of the Belgian white beer either - if it's going to be that style, I'd prefer a Hefeweizen (but plz not to confuse me with a beer snob, when it comes down to it I'll drink anything except Nodogoshi).

It's more of a county-by-country thing, isn't it? Weren't you telling us that you can come by something quite drinkable very cheaply in Germany? Not that everyone would call it a civilised country, but whose counting, anyway?

Being frequently forced by professonal etiquette to accept Happoshu when offered A Beer, I strongly support all efforts to denounce both this insidious synonymical creep and the foul and fraudulent brew that engenders it.

Perhaps what Japan really needs is stricter social regulation similar to the industrial labelling laws that would provide sharp and shocking penalties for this sort of libational misrepresentation. Now that would be a Kolonial Klub social outcry I could actually get behind.

I'm with yanpa on the Hefs. Though I like the American Pacific Northwest take better than the German original. Or at least the German ones I've had. Just a bit too fruity (and sometimes way too fruity) for me. Especially the ones that taste like banana :puke:

The only American Pacific Northwest hefeweizen I tried tasted like liquid sawdust. Mind you that's a poor sample size so I remain open minded.

Same does not apply for Pabst Blue Ribbon, which should be banned as a crime against humanity.

Yeah, there are a couple of shitty ones for sure. When I lived in Seattle hef was my beer of choice though I can't remember which one I used to drink all the time anymore. Getting old, I guess.

One thing I don't like about the Japanese craft beer scene other than the cost of a pint is everyone seems to be going for that super hoppy flavor. Don't get me wrong. I love a good strong American-style IPA but it gets boring after while and sometime you want a beer that doesn't overpower the taste of whatever you're eating.
