In that case plants aren't growing back either.

But that may be because it is in the desert...

Isn't there a more regular way to burn everything down?

You know, not by Agent Orange, but by matches.

And what is that big white pipe next to the stairs? For pumping up the cooling water to the local nuke plant?!?

Not sure how legal (or controllable) that would be.

The white pipe is from on top of the mountain (need to do some explorin' up there) and goes down to a small (very small) hydro electric building (I think that's what it is...it's definitely the electric company) on the other side of the street. I don't like it much but given how there is never anyone there, I'm sure I can hide it with some strategic shrubbery placement.

Thanks for all the suggestions, so far we've been going at it with two of these:

bc231rs[1].jpg

Also, using a chainsaw/heavy duty cutters on the trees...there is just...so fucking much to cut. This lot is actually 3 combined and 6646㎡ which is why I still favor some sort of tractor action but I don't see anywhere here that has the proper bush hog or flail mower attachments. I'm starting to think buying a goat or two to move around while I attack the trees I don't want with a chainsaw/wood chipper may take a lil more time than a tractor but ultimately will do a better job for far less.

Goat cheese is awesome...

Are you sure? For private, non commercial use on private land? Unless that is you way of saying that those kinds of equipment are not cheap, and you will get no argument from me on that point.

Saaa. I "tried" to run a bush hog mower attachment ($2,500 used) on my 25-HP John Deere back home in Colorado. Never again. You need at least at a 40-HP tractor (more like 500 HP), which is to say a major investment. After several weekends of my trying to clear 50 acres of brush and invasive mesquite trees with a chain saw and a my little John Deere tractor's brush hog attachment, finally I ended up hiring a contractor with a hard-core, death-metal tractor saw to cut and drag out all scraggly 4+ inch diameter mesquite (I ended up making money by selling mesquite firewood to a couple of local mesquite BBQ restaurants).

Now I just hire a neighbor to come by every couple of years with a full-blown 500-HP tractor and run his monster bush hog mower attachment over far reaches of the "back 40" of my property. During my summer vacation maintenance, I run John Deere garden tractor's toy brush hog attachment just to mow the 10 acres of "lawn" around my bunkhouse.

EDIT:
Hot damn, this is what I want!

Mo' betta...

If you use that as shown on the picture, you might be more effective with a different (brush cutting) blade, as shown at the end of this video:

I still think the goat option is a good one. Environmentally friendly, cheap and you can just sit on your land and watch them do all the work.

Then when they are done, I have some great curry recipes that work great with goat meat.

OK I am kidding about the goat meat but seems easier than trying to milk one for the cheese. They are not the cuddliest of pets. But will be great fun if you ever have temple rug rats sometime soon.

Tis according to my lemur after contacting a few of the rental places (they won't rent to you without a license) that want 70,000 a day. (though that wouldn't stop me from buying a cheap used one and reselling it)

Hmmmm, that doesn't look so bad but if we went that route or the goats, we'd still need a wood chipper to get rid of the larger stuff.

Ahh, OK, I can see that the equipment hire places wouldn't let you have it without proof that you know how to operate it.

Ahh, it is easy to operate.

And if you make a small mistake, the worst thing that can happen is one foot less to stand on...

Living where the population decreases by about three every winter with snow blower accidents, I say you underestimate the danger. Sure, it is foolishness, in unclogging these machines while they are still operating, but you get familiar with them, you get complacent, and you have an accident. And you end up all over the neighbourhood, in an attractive arc.

There is always the option of running over someone else, too. Someone working along side you who is too close when they slip. Endless fun and mirth.

Unclog it while it's on? Fuuuuuuuu

I'd say having a fear of these things is healthy (and contributes to good safety measures)

I think a lot of that comes from the school of "it took me ten fucking minutes to get the thing started this morning and it takes just as long even when the engine is warm so I will trust the clutch which is on a dinky little lever while I whack at the machine with a lump of wood while standing in front of the intake." The bit that is not "I am a macho snow country man and I know my way around these things." Industrial accidents happen everywhere.

Point well taken...just saying my mind can come up with a million ways to die using one of these so an extra 10 minutes to start isn't likely to motivate me to leave the thing running while I stand in front of it.

Ya... Not sure why the Js always leave cars or machinery running when they are not operating them. They always disobey safety rule number 1, "NEVER leave a machine running unattended."

Even with the hammer knife mower and chainsaw...that there is some hard fucking work!

Yeah, there was already regrowth after a few weeks of my last attack....but much easier to keep at bay. At least now there is a good 5-10cm of mulch covering everything haha. I was also against using chemicals but gave in on the Sugina that proliferates in this area...hit all those places with some sort of JDM round up formulation that's supposed to kill Sugina and become fertilizer once it kills. Could be worse though, at least there is not take growing there.

I might not get much work in tomorrow though...rain from 3pm supposedly
