What I wonder is whether or not Japanese brewers could make beer that's as good as some of the Belgian stuff but keep it cheap because it's technically classified as happoshu or happosei. My guess is that if they can and do, the gub'ment will close that loophole.

What I know and prefer about any beer can be summed up in 2 simple phrases: Yes, or No. If it is called a lager or just Beer, chances are high I might quite like it. As an example: Hao, Yebisu. If there is any visible description of its ingredients or the delicacy and difficulty of the process used to produce it, chances are I won't. As an example, any lemming liked product containing one or more of the following terms: IPA; Ale; Crafted; Hops; White; Ancient; Traditional; Local; carefully selected..................The whole Beer Homo phenomenon here on the Wet Coast is quite simply out of hand. They're media led lemmings doing as they're told and reveling in their imagined anti-corporate individualism as they do so.

And thanks, I must have missed that memo. Don't forget though, mine is the officially official post-homophobic use, in that it revives the old school use to mean Looser without any implied or intended slur on sexual preference.

Besides, anybody that complains about that crap is probably one anyways.................

Aaaah, okay. I think I am starting to get it. So like SJ said, if Japanese brewers were able to manipulate the definitional gymnastics part they would be looking at a potential windfall, which would then be closed by the government.

About the only complaint I have about Japanese beer is that 12 bottles seems to cost 12 times more than 1 bottle...........and 24 .......24 times more than 1. Is that still true with Costco and Yamaya and those guys around? I have a vague memory of my ex telling me it was cheaper to buy 12 singles than a boxed case of 12 because the latter had a convenience premium, but that was in like 1990. I prefer to drink my beer in bars anyways, but it's a weird pricing regime if it's true.

EDIT: I just checked the Yamaya site. If you buy a case of a mere 30 bottles you get a whopping 10 yen ber bottle discount. That's 300 yen cheaper than 30 single bottles!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you boys are strapped in; Japan is thundering into the 1980s at an alarming pace.

Seiyu is tipping in the direction of (miniscule) bulk discounts, and they recently went through a phase of random "2 for xxx yen" offers, where "xxx yen" was appreciably less than double the unit price.

Yeah, there are a couple of shitty ones for sure. When I lived in Seattle hef was my beer of choice though I can't remember which one I used to drink all the time anymore. Getting old, I guess.

Is Blue Moon a nice quaff? I seem to remember seeing that at the store here (in BC). Also, do they make real beer, or just icky hipster stuff? I wish we could get Rolling Rock up here. Labatt's redoes it, but it tastes like Labatt's, which is always a shame.

Well, if they've been bought, what's to wait for? BTW, the measure in question is the use of external validation when describing the hipster brew in question, especially the naming of a specific Beer Critic, while at the same time criticising other beers in purely subjective terms or resorting to social snobbery. That drives me batty. You never seem to do that, and personal taste and preference is unassailable, so I raise my real beer and say, Carry On, Young Carson (insert generic hipster name here), and may your fake horn rimmed glasses and porkpie hat worn at a jaunty angle serve you well. If you lack either of those Beer Hipster sine qua non I can stop at the charity shop on the way to the airport.

A real chu-hi is supposed to be shochu but most of the cheap canned ones are made with vodka. I'll drink them over happoshu but they definitely aren't better than beer. Though, when I'm hanging out at my favorite shitamachi izakayas I'm all about the shochu highballs.

Depends. Is it snobbish to snub an way overpriced (in Japan) mediocre beer by Coors? Seems to me that snobs drink expensive crap because it's "in." But hey, if you like it, drink it--I won't begrudge anyone that.
