So...why don't you tell us why Japan's kaigun flag is used at sporting events?

You have a valid point, Takechan.
The guy doesn't know the difference between the military flag and the national flag.
That's pretty sad.

I think he might be talking about the designs on the shirts that look like rays and not the flag patches themselves. Not that I'm defending his assertion.

Maybe, but that'd be really pushin' it.
The flags themselves are the normal Hinomaru.

I'm kinda surprised he didn't bring up the manji (卍). Or is that used in Korea too?

It is. I think it's used everywhere in the Buddhist world. When I was teaching in The States, one of my students from Korea had a necklace with a large gold manji on it. He was confronted about it in the street on more than one occasional. I think he eventually stopped wearing it. When I was in Mongolia I was taking a bus somewhere and there happened to be some Dutch backpackers on there. A jeep passed us that had a a spare tire cover with a large manji on. One the girls started flipping out till her boyfriend and I explained it was a Buddhist thing and had nothing to do with Nazis. I also remember an incident in high school where a kid in my class was explaining the difference between a manji and a swastika. My high school had a very large Jewish population and one of the girls in the class got really upset with him and asked why he would even know the difference in a very accusatory manner. I remember thinking, "Maybe because he's Thai you moron."

When I was a student one of my professors showed a Manji when we had lunch with him.

We were like WTF, especially since this guy was known to be Jewish (he was in hiding for many years from the Nazis). Then he explained the real meaning.

Great guy. Still remember his fascinating lectures in which he often threw in interesting stories. Unfortunately, he passed away many years ago.

Saaa, twitter.com/HirokoTabuchi/followers number 74.8K, and I recognize many of the active FG members on her followers list. Sadly I haven't figured out what the famous Canadian Journalist is using for his stealth account to regale us of riveting tales his new life tossing cow chips in Manitoba.

Probably because of his successful campaign to have most of his old user names suspended, which makes his current user name a little harder to locate: at least the parody accounts used to mention the then current real account regularly, so you could find him if you remembered any of the series of five accounts he had used.

Don't be so sure...that rib cage may hold some surprises. (I just hope the surprise is boobs and not a shit ton of padding) Wouldn't be the first time I've been shocked by some hidden boobies.
