"Japan's Abe Is the World's Best Leader"

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Thu Jun 12, 2014 11:45 am

Japan's Abe Is the World's Best Leader

I was a Shinzo Abe skeptic. That’s putting it mildly. After all, I was still living in Japan when Abe’s disastrous first term in office put a halt to the reform process begun by Junichiro Koizumi, and ushered in a return to the bad old days of prime minister musical chairs that paralyzed Japan in the 1990s.

When Abe swept back into power in 2012, I thought he was just going to try to talk down the yen and give a little boost to stocks, increasing his public support just long enough to ram through a revision of Japan’s pacifist constitution. I thought he was going to ignore Japan’s moribund economy and long-festering social problems in order to throw red meat to his right-wing backers.

Boy, was I wrong. I was wrong, wrong, wrong.

Let me be blunt: Shinzo Abe is the most effective national leader in the world right now.

Evo Morales?

History won't be kind to Abe. Years from now, people will look back over the crumbling remains of Japan and point to this second try with Abe as the pivotal point where Japan went very wrong.

It was indeed. He's got some of weird hangup / theory about how Japanese men treat women. And it shows even in his latest article.

Now, there's nothing wrong with having an opinion about the treatment of women and wanting it to be better. But using WW2 history as evidence of poor treatment of 21st century women in the workplace (or vice versa) was a little bizarre. And using a internet porno clip to make a point is even more bizarre.

Since he deleted the whole exchange, I concluded that he was drinking and when he sobered up, he decided that his bursts of 140 characters were perhaps ill advised.

Yikes! Noah Smith has been off my radar totally.
Perhaps, he was been sucked into the click-bait trap of posting outrageous tripe in order to increase his google hits on his stories (and therefore his popularity/income) because he sounds beyond demented.

If I recall correctly (it was many months ago...), Noah Smith tweeted this link:

http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/b ... men-022714

... and I asked that since the author was a military man, what his opinion were on the documents and interviews conducted by the U.S. military of captured comfort women were -- since I wanted to know the opinion of a U.S. military man about documents and investigations done by the U.S. military.

In response... Noah kind of ... flipped out.

From my experience IN GENERAL I'd tend to agree with him regarding how shitty MOST Japanese men treat women (the whole lack of real self confidence projecting onto those below isn't limited to men here though) but I don't hold a chip on my shoulder about it or prejudge every J-d00d I meet with that mindset. Adding some rape porn in there...must have been drinking, the obvious porn choice should have been all the weird animated and mock child porn.

Noah Smith is an assistant professor of finance at Stony Brook University and a freelance writer for a number of finance and business publications. He maintains a personal blog, called Noahpinion.

Maybe he was worried about Stony Brook finding out. Links to rape porn and views that could be interpreted as racist probably wouldn't go down too well in the PC environment of most US universities.

Reform in Japan: The third arrow

DURING Japan’s Meiji restoration, which began in 1868, a group of reform-minded officials and citizens worked together to stamp out feudalism, prise open borders and push the country onto a path of rapid industrialisation. In little over ten years they reshaped Japan from top to bottom. That well-known tale has left a perennial optimism among the Japanese that they can, when absolutely necessary, change direction. Others, especially foreigners, are not so sure. In two decades of economic stagnation Japan’s leaders have repeatedly failed to rescue their country’s fortunes.

Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister since 2012, has offered something for both sides. He started surprisingly well. Last year, with Meiji speed, he shot off the first two arrows of “Abenomics”: a huge fiscal stimulus and a dramatic programme of monetary easing. His approval rating soared, as did the stockmarket, and his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) triumphed in an election for the upper house of the Diet, Japan’s parliament. But his first attempt at a third arrow of structural reforms to unleash growth, an announcement in June 2013, fell flat. He seemed to have been nobbled by Japan’s various lobbies. Then in December he paid a visit to the Yasukuni shrine, which was taken as a symbol of reverence for Japan’s criminal militarist past. That infuriated outsiders and strengthened suspicions that his focus on economic reform had wavered.

This week Mr Abe is back with a proper third arrow ...

Proper would be to fire the counts who heckled at that assembly meeting... But it depends on whose definition of proper will be used.
