Really? My coworkers always talk about how good the US is?

Anyway I hate the way people who've paid no attention to soccer since the last World Cup are suddenly huge fans and experts on the game. All my colleagues talk about at lunch now is the World Cup like it's the most important thing in their lives. There's only one of them that actually follows soccer at any other time though.

I did get a good laugh at the "Ikenmen of the World Cup" segment on TV...they only through one J-player in there and I think that was out of necessity as the d00d looks like the male version of this Nadeshiko bombshell:

J-ref blows calls in opening match. I wonder if the press here in J-land will even mention this or will they come to Nishimura's defense.

I got a misconduct from a J-ref for simply looking at him...while I think the power goes to the head of most people, the officials I've seen in Japan have been by far the worst and most emotional assholes by far.

Reminds me of when gaijin baseball players in Japan got more strikes called on them because the umps gave them a wider strike zone because they were bigger.

Re: World Cup

Postby matsuki » Fri Jun 13, 2014 2:22 pm

I dunno that it was a sabetsu type thing as much as it was that being an official is the only time in his life he feels he has power and wants to show it.

http://live.sportlive.co.za/?sport=news ... _id=322689

The Asian Football Confederation have praised Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura for a 'strong performance' in Brazil's win over Croatia.

Nishimura was the villain for Croatia in Sao Paulo on Thursday with the 42-year-old awarding a penalty for minimal contact on Brazil striker Fred in the second half, which allowed the hosts to claim a 2-1 lead in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup.

That decision and Nishimura's general performance was widely criticised but the AFC backed their man after the final for making 'big calls' at the Arena Corinthians.

"(Nishimura) gave a strong performance in some high-pressure, split-second situations, with his awarding of a penalty to Brazil and adjudging...Ivica Olic for a foul on goalkeeper Julio Cesar (a minute earlier)," an article on the AFC's website read.

In the 69th minute, Nishimura awarded a penalty to Brazil after Fred went down in the box when backing into Croatia defender Dejan Lovren.

Neymar scored from the spot to notch his second goal before Oscar added a third late in the match to wrap up Brazil's 3-1 victory.

While the AFC conceded that Fred 'may have been overdramatic as he went to ground' they hailed Nishimura for remaining 'unaffected by the pressure of being under the intense scrutiny of over 60,000 fans at the Arena Corinthians and the hundreds of millions watching worldwide'.

Nishimura is one of just five referees at the World Cup that also officiated in South Africa four years ago.

In South Africa, Nishimura was in charge of four matches including a quarter-final between the Netherlands and Brazil, while the Japanese has also refereed the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup final and the AFC Champions League decider in the same year.

Well, to be fair to him, you actually had the temerity to look at him after the call. Most Japanese wouldn't, IME. OTOH, what you said. I have always wondered what sort of dweeb would want to do that level of officiating, and your argument is mine as well. And not just in Japan. Our officiating here is shocking at all levels in all sports save the NHL, even allowing for that uncalled goalie interference bit in OT of Game 2.

As for the call in the Brazil - Croatia match, probably not his best moment, but it would've helped the Yugo's whinefest if they had managed to score without Brazilian help and put somebody in goal that knows what they're doing while in it. That Yugo keeper is shockingly bad, and the coach is..............a Croatian.

I hope they go 0 for 3.

PS Spain.................not so tikki, but delightfully tacky. I bet not even Cardinal Fang expected that one.

Hey,
Not sure if access is region specific, but this works for me. The feed is a bit clunky, but it's in English with English, and it's CBC, which is good for everyone. Not sure of their total coverage.

Didn't this thread start from the wish to listen to British commentary?

I know nothing about soccer, so was instantly convinced by the local spin:

Japan loses 2-1 to the Ivory Coast in the World Cup. Japan appeared to be in very good shape prior to the first Ivory Coast goal but proved entirely inflexible to and incapable of adapting to systemic change because when Drogba came on there were two quick concessions (within a 2-3 minute period). Both goals were provided by Aurier on the right flank. The keeper may have been responsible for Gervinho's winner but the manager needed to have introduced greater squad flexibility. Substitutions are designed precisely to upset the opponent's expectations. Japan will certainly face greater challenges against Columbia but Greece will be no walk-overs. Japan must be provided with the ability to adapt to systemic change on-the-fly or this World Cup will get very ugly very quickly

Surprising to hear that Japanese inflexibility and inability to adapt to systemic change would be seen as a cause of such a calamity. I mean, isn't the keystone of their recent economic might and ascendancy due largely to their flexibility and ability to quickly adopt necessary systemic change??????

Not to mention that Drogba is simply one of the most impressive footballers of the past 30 years. And he's like 50 or something.

Anyways, Yeah.................sounds like a succinct encapsulation of my experience playing amateur mens' league. Or is it 'men's' league?

Ringing any hockey bells, Chokonen?????

At any rate, a tough loss that seems to be giving rise to some rather typical FG responses, but if I had to live under the weight of that media onslaught I'd probably be just as snippy. Besides, why are they in Blue?????

D00d, nomikai on friday, the Kings win the cup saturday, and just got back from practice tonight....not one person on the ice today (besides myself) knew the Kings had won the cup. Seriously, the garapagosu mindset in this cuntry never ceases to amaze me. :wall: It's also got a heavy tinge of the "no Jap player, no care" mentality. I mean, these guys are fucking hockey players and they don't even follow the NHL? Of course they all know someone on the ICEBUCKS or OIJI and how they're doin'.

Let's call it the Samurai Blues...when everyteam/player/etc. in your cuntry trains/plays/etc. the same way, you lose a lot of depth. It's even more obvious when you see the success stories. The locals really hate having Nomo, Ichiro, etc. pointed out as being the most non-Japanese-style baseball players. Military/Tradition does not trump experience, depth, and the ability to adapt and solve other teams.

And that is why I don't want to have to listen to the amateur NHK announcers. Yes, Argentina won, but, especially in the first half, Bosnia played very well, and had more scoring chances, but did we hear about any of the Bosnia players? No we were subjected to calls of "Messi, Messi, Messi!!!!!!!!!" If I'm not mistaken the feed is the same for each game, so why don't they include the English call on the subchannel. It can't be that expensive is it?
