Choko, I know exactly what you mean about people here knowing nothing about the NHL, even though they are crazy about hockey. The will still talk about Paul Kariya, because he had a little Yamato blood running through his veins. But ask them about Jonathan Quick, or Kopitar, or Justin Williams the Conn Smythe winner, and you will get blank stares.
I just was watching one of the vapid lunch shows, and they are sure that Japan will win against Greece for two of the stupidest reasons. The Greeks have to travel much further to get to their game, and the humidity will be much higher where they are going. According to the rocket scientist on the panel, the Greeks don't play well in high humidity!!! WTF, that is what Japan was blaming their last loss on, and this is now going to be a benefit to them.
The other reason is that in 2005 during the confederation cup, what ever that is, Japan defeated Greece 1-0, and of course those two squads are exactly the same as now!
Oh yes a third reason, Japan is staying at a luxury resort, with pools and jacuzzi's, while the Greeks are forced to stay in a business style hotel! The whole panel are laughing at this, not thinking that, A, Greece was on the verge of default not so long ago, and maybe this is all they can afford. B, this luxury resort the Japanese players are staying at is being paid for with our tax yen. No laughing matter!

I think Kariya is half...but d00d is Canadian as they come. Japan had Fukufuji, a goalie....and Ryan O'Marra (Canadian FG born in Tokyo...left when he was 1  ) but is still the only cuntry to have an imaginary player

Taro Tsujimoto is an imaginary ice hockey player who was legally drafted by the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres 183rd overall in the 11th round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft.

On the other end of the spectrum, the best Japanese players seem to all have been abroad in the Canada, US, etc. I'm really curious as to how Korean hockey will develop. While they're just as xenophobic (if not more than) Japan, the push there seems to be quite international. It also helps that there have been two Korean born NHL players as opposed to

With analysis like that, I wonder if they are driving metal stakes into the fields to impregnate it with Japanese "ki." I hope Greece blows them away...Japanese fans are great losers but really annoying winners.

Korea played a good game today, much more coordinated than the home 11 could ever muster. But I have to wonder, how much money did the Russian goalie get to let that cream puff goal in. After reading the book "The Fix", it isn't hard to believe the fixers might have had something to do with the result!

You think they'll continue to broadcast games after Japan gets eliminated? And for how many months will TV land here keep replaying the one goal by Honda?

Not in the round robin phase (in case you meant that seriously). So anyways, watching it on the CBC.ca live streaming feed, I was enraptured by the thoroughly enjoyable British commentator, but I did start to wonder if I was watching Japan-Greece but hearing the feed from one of the African team matches.

As an example, at one point in a beautiful little cross field movement at 67 minutes according to said play by play Jagoowa played it to Acheeda who crossed it for Akubu, who royally fucked up what should have been a rather easy potter for the win. Which not only raises questions about Japan's continued inability to score at the top level, but also about the linguistic deficiencies of professional British football announcers. Is an absolutely non-variant a,i,u,e,o vowel system really that exotic???

BTW, Canman,
That Messi-anic fervour you were complaining about isn't restricted to the Japanese idiots. The CBC advertorialists are every bit as bad, whomever the designated object of worship might be in that particular game. If you only had the play by play to go on, you might think that C. Ronaldo had already lifted the cup, that Messi scored six goals last game, and that Wayne Rooney's FIRST World Cup Finals goal in THREE World Cups ( :keyboardcoffee: ) was his 100th and broke an overtime tie to win the championship. Let's face it, it's all about the Cult of Personality and selling knockoff shirts, and even the play by play guys are in on it now. :???:

BTW, I quite like all 3 players, though Rooney really is little more than a talented ginger cretin, but they all stink at this level. Absolutely shocking how bad all 3 play at the international finals level.

A banner left by the religious cult "Science of Happiness" stands by the road near the training

I think if it's streaming, it's by definition "legal" under the current law.

chris_smalling_mug_president_barack_obama-385270.jpg

Please tell me this is a hoax.

Company confuses Barack Obama with Chris Smalling on England team mug set

It's been a forgettable World Cup for England on the pitch. Off the pitch, one company is having a forgettable few days as well, as they had hoped to cash in on a successful tournament for The Three Lions, as the Sunday Express notes.

Among the English World Cup merchandise an unnamed British company had created featuring the likenesses of the English soccer team were a set of mugs that included one glaring error. You could purchase a Steven Gerrard or Joe Hart or Wayne Rooney, among others, but if you’re a big Chris Smalling fan, you might notice something a tad off about his appearance.

Many of the English articles I read about the Samurai Blues poor showing cite:

"outdated tactics"

"inability to adapt"

"lack of creativity"

and finally

"lack of imported talent" (naturalized, dual citizens, etc.)

The J-news coverage seemed to blame the coach for which players he used/didn't use.

"outdated tactics" - Yes

"inability to adapt" - Yes

"lack of creativity" - Yes

FTFY "lack of imported talent" (period.)

dont blame the coach... it is not like he pulled out all the "good" players and put shitty ones in. First they completely dropped the ball vs Ivory Coast, then they got frozen by Greece (10 man for well over half the game BTW) and then got owned by Columbia.

Thats it Japland, you done.
