I thought he was just making a joke...isn't it pretty well known that ADIDAS is a Japanese-like shortening of founder Adolf "Adi" Dassler's name.

No, it's a German-like shortening. Though TBH I think Adidas does a very good job of not letting on that they're a German company...

Yes, but it is dated and has public schoolboy connotations.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

You get the feeling that Adi was the more straight laced one while Rudy perhaps had more soul.

Which works perfectly in America where soccer has traditionally been seen a sport for rich white pussies and girls. Immigration is changing that though.

When I was on JET a group of us ALT's got together and one of the American girls was wearing Umbro shorts. My English friend thought it was funny because that was what football hooligans wore. I thought that was funny because when I was growing up that was what the preppiest spoiled rich kids wore.

Although when I moved to NYC my impression of soccer changed because my high school had the best team in our division. I was friends with a few of the players and the team was all white with one Asian kid but being a public school in the Bronx all the other school teams were either all Hispanic or all West Indian depending on the neighborhood. They (or more specifically their fans) didn't take too kindly to losing to a bunch of white kids and on a couple of occasions the team had to run for their lives after winning a match. One time they tried to escape in the coach's van but the tires had been slashed so the other team's coach helped them get away.

So, if they would have been logical, they would've called it "focker"...

I think they are suggesting that SOCcer is developed from AsSOCiation. It is possible, I suppose, but it is the first I have heard of it. I had never really thought where the name came from. Probably because I have little interest in it. But I can't help now wondering why it isn't pronounced "soaker" then.

The only reason they didn't call it focker was because of the connotation of the word. So they became creative and derived something from asSOCiation. Hell, they could also have called it "asser"...
