...Details are very fuzzy at this time. He seemed to use some kind of gasoline or alcohol, and judging by his appearance from photos looks like he was in his sixties. This means he would remember Japan’s previous logistical involvement in America’s war in Vietnam in previous decades, which prompted mass protests and also at least one similar act self-immolation. And it goes without saying that this protester’s public suicide recalls those of the Buddhist monks in Vietnam in the 1960′s.
At the time of writing nothing has been reported in the mainstream media nor have any details about the victim’s name been announced. It is unknown if the man survived, though he was filmed being extinguished by the fire services after he fell off the girders onto the bridge below.

And, of course, on the Abe-friendly NHK news report, now, it's North Korea, North Korea, North Korea. Why would we want to lead off a broadcast with a major protest event in the heart of Tokyo that goes against Abe's militarization of Japan? No, we must scare the people with the North Korean boogeyman--missiles and abductions for over a third of the broadcast. It's NHK's duty to support Abe's agenda. Every time I watch NHK, it makes me proud of myself that I don't pay--I'm really a humanitarian.

A man in Japan set himself on fire at a busy intersection in Tokyo on Sunday in an apparent protest against Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's plans to ease limits of the country's pacifist constitution, police and witnesses said.
Japan is poised for a historic shift in its defense policy by ending a ban that has kept the military from fighting abroad since World War Two.
Abe's cabinet is expected to adopt as early as Tuesday a resolution revising a long-standing interpretation of the U.S.-drafted constitution to lift the ban after his ruling party finalizes an agreement with its junior partner.[ID:nL4N0P810Z]
It was not immediately clear whether the man survived.

I get that. It looks like he was trying to throw the guy onto the pads but missed. And did you notice how he tried to stomp the fire out? I wonder how flammable those pads are.

The guy is oozing fire, the top of the bridge still burning quite well after the fall. If he was soaked in gasoline it might be this that is spilled and burning the mats, not helped by the water...(don't remember if firemen call this facilitator or accelerator)
Pretty sure that someone with a better dictionary than me could find the maker of these mats and where to buy them... Might be available on rakuten...
