The funny thing about "Jap" is most Japanese don't find it offensive, it's mostly those "Asian American" groups that get their panties in a twist about it. Yeah, it has it's history and there is even in the "Amejin" term as well but seems like such a stretch to get bent out of shape about. If you think of how many things here are referred to as bei(米)this and bei that, you can understand why most Japanese have trouble with understanding why "Jap" is supposed to offend them. On the other hand, nearly every Japanese I've asked, seem to think "Gaijin call us yellow monkeys" or "yellow cabs." While I've heard the "Yellow cab" term used jokingly, I've never once seen a FG call Japanese a "yellow monkey."

Jap is a filthy term with a filthy history that deserves to be buried in a deep and filthy grave, not a panty twister. Japanese themselves don't get it because its not widely known, they abbreviate everything anyways, and they like that glottal stop double P sound; if anything it sounds cute. Jpn-Cdns would smack you hard for that characterisation, and I would clap even though I like you and your style. They never did a single goddamned thing to deserve the disgusting way they were treated and they don't deserve to be called whiners because they point that out. Chinese in North America as well, but they're so annoying as people until about the 3rd generation it's almost acceptable.

And a double up Yes on the Yellow Cab/Yellow Monkey BS. I have only ever heard it as a Grade 3 Oyaji defence for their use of filthy derogatives for people like me and you. As for the Bei abbreviation thing, that is only a derogatory in the same sense that Cdns use "American" as an oblique code for Fat, Moronic, Loudmouth Idjit in Knee Socks and Chino Shorts. They aren't commensurate: Jap is a loaded, historical epithet used against a heavily discriminated minority; Bei is simply linguistic indolence and only used as an epithet by association against a people who have NEVER been at the short end of the racist or social discrimination stick. Americans are not now nor ever have been an object of any systematic discrimination whatsoever. But the fact that fat white people in knee socks like to claim Victimhood is monstrously ironic. It's like a global historic Charles Manson crying out sympathy. And if you hear me call an American "Beijin" you know you guys are getting on my nerves again. For which I apologise in advance, coz you're actually good guys, there's simply way too fucking many of ya. ;)

BTW, I don't mean Americans in the aboriginal sense, natch. That is a very different kettle of pemmican.

PS Jape is completely alien to North American ears in MYHOMO. I would say Caper as an occasional synonym, but that doesn't work for baking soda volcano type Jolly Japes. I can't think of what we would call that. erp.............

Yellow monkey... Well, i can give that one up.

Jape was a short lived word for me.

Kuro...while I totally get where you're coming from and the history behind it...unless it's being used in an offensive way and/or directed at someone who was alive back then, it seems a bit of a stretch to get upset about. (especially by 5th generation Chinese Canadians/Americans  ) Part of that history includes Chinese wearing all kinds of "Not a Jap, don't shoot!" pins and such.

Yes. Very Yes. I have only heard it from them as I described. It is a Japanese domestic term anyways. A weekly talid journalist invented it, so they say.

IPU,
Be that as it may.................have you dated any North American girls lately; not much difference there, MYHETRO. I like it; if we can be sluts why can't they, eh!? Besides, slutty Japanese girls are just delightful: they gobble, they swallow, and they come like runaway trains, all without The Rules the white girls have, and with only half the Talk Show drama queen crap . Yea for us.

Choko,
I knew you would pooky. :-D Agreeing that most everybody (including poor or stupid whites) is way too touchy and whiney about Racism!!!, there is no inoffensive or neutral use of the term Jap. None. Nor chink, nor chinaman, nor the bad N word for the melanin blessed. Same as we don't use the term wagonburner no more except to reference olden white stupidities. And those 5th generation Jpn-Cdn (or whatever) kids have grandparents that were born in or put in camps for the crime of being a Taro or a Hanako. All as we fought those who did even worse to people guilty of being named Shlomo and Rebecca. And we didn't fully free ours until 194F'in9; people born beside my parents were not allowed to move back to the coast until 4 years after the war they had nothing to do with ended. At least you guys had a constitution that allowed a court case that resulted in the camps being ruled unlawful and closed, and they got some of their stuff back. Ours got bupkis. I agree it is pointless for them to be as outraged as some of them get, but sympathy is not too far a trip for me. Even the Chinese Cdns at the time took in the evicted Jpn-Cdns, and their home countries were at war at the time. They saw the writing on the wall, and heard the echo of the Mounties' jackboots. The jewish Cdns in the east took them in like they were family.

Also, the one part I really like about the whole Asian-Cdn Outrage thing is that they are by far and away the most residually racist of all major NAmrcn ethnic groups; shameless Asian hypocrisy and the stoutly defended double standards have always been a great source of mirth and irony to me. It's like watching an 8 year old trying to explain why a mirror works, but not quite getting it right. And the Japanese are merely gifted amateurs compared to the Chinese and Koreans. Those 2 are Olympians.

Oh, they're gonna get one before us. :-x

Environmental protection key to proposed railway up Mount Fuji
The idea of building a railway to climb Mount Fuji is not new, though it has never been realized. But now the leader of a local tourism group is pitching a plan to create an environmentally friendly rail line that he believes represents the best chance yet of seeing this long-held dream come true.

The 30-kilometer railway to the fifth station of Mount Fuji would help control the number of visitors to Japan’s iconic mountain, which struggles to cope with garbage and other environmental problems, said Koichiro Horiuchi, chairman of the Fujigoko Tourism Association and president of railroad operator Fuji Kyuko Co.

The railway would be built on an existing public road, Horiuchi said, so there would be almost no environmental destruction.

“Taking that into account, it would be very effective for environmental protection and is highly feasible,” he said.

Under his plan, rail would be laid along a tollway called the Fuji Subaru Line starting from Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes, to Mount Fuji’s fifth station at an altitude of 2,305 meters. If the plan goes ahead, Horiuchi hopes to complete the railway by 2020, when Tokyo hosts the Summer Olympics.

The scenery en route is characterized by beautiful lakes and mountains, and four to five stations are planned along the route. The project is likely to cost around ¥100 billion, which would require the involvement of the state, Horiuchi said.

Horiuchi’s made the spotlight last year when Mount Fuji was designated a World Heritage site by the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. But he has had the idea since Fuji Kyuko and Swiss railway Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn formed a partnership in 1991 to become sister railways, he said.

Since then, the railway has dispatched its employees to the Swiss railway to learn how the mountain railway was built and maintained.

Helmut Biner, head of markets and sales at Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, is supportive of the plan, saying that animals would be less disturbed and there would be less air pollution, helping to protect nature. He also believes it will contribute to the local economy as a train could be operated during winter, when roads are closed.

“Our company is giving Fuji Kyuko all help,” such as responding to questions about infrastructure, energy, marketing and environmental topics, Biner said.

Speaking about railways in Switzerland, Horiuchi said he was impressed by how they think about protecting the environment.

While in Japan, building a railway is often thought of as destroying the environment, in Europe, “They have a wonderful concept of letting people enjoy and learn about nature’s greatness with a minimum amount of capital investment,” Horiuchi said.

For example, Jungfrau Railway, which takes passengers to the highest railway station in Europe, Jungfraujoch, at an altitude of 3,454 meters, uses eco-friendly technology to accommodate visitors.

The technology includes a water-processing system that uses melting ice and snow on surrounding mountains as well as a heating system that derives energy from solar power.

While the Jungfraujoch station is equipped with five restaurants serving dishes such as curry and steak, the railway takes extra care over waste disposal by strictly sorting, compressing and carrying garbage to a village below the mountain via the railway...
