Why The Super Typhoon Heading Toward Japan Could Be So Dangerous

"Super typhoon" Neoguri is headed towards Okinawa and then Tokyo this week. The storm has been called a "once in decades" event, with sustained winds of 150 miles per hour.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the system, which is already producing winds up to 150 mph, may develop into an "extremely intense" storm by Tuesday as it moves north.

"I can't stress enough how dangerous this typhoon may be when it hits Okinawa," wrote Brigadier General James Hecker on the base's Facebook page on Sunday. "This is not just another typhoon."

Got in a days work on my jungle battle.....just before we got hit by a crazy shoal. I wonder if I am going to end up driving back to Tokyo in the middle of this super typhoon...last time I drove through one, I was lucky to arrive at all.

At least it's a regular car... Tall minivans in side winds are an abomination, the steering is possessed with a mind of its own... (If only the Rasheen was still made... could have painted it like a U.N. Humvee with a fake machine gun turret on the roof...)

Reporting from Fukuoka - kids are off school this afternoon, and all day Thursday.
We had heavy rain with brutal thunder and lightning on Monday, then sunny on Tuesday afternoon.
The rain is back today, and starting to get a bit heavier now (no wind or thunder/lightning yet though).
I've heard the "biggest storm in decades" before, gotta wonder if it isn't partially a ploy on the part of supermarket chains to sell more perishables as people batten down the hatches...

Nothing much thus far out here in the west country. A lot a happy kids as school got cancelled at lunchtime until further notice which will likely be lunchtime tomorrow at the earliest. Just got back from Max Valu on a coffee run and they were they were there a larking about with the foreigner in fine fettle and super genki mode.

Little to no actual typhoon though - just heat, cloud and humid, humid humid.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

It was cloudy, but not raining, so I didun't pay much attenshiun... Then after getting mah cheezeburger fix I went back to the parking...

And the visibility was 1 meter with water starting to raise... I hurried a bit since between me and home there's the river stix who can spill with nothing more than 10 minutes of rain if she's in a bad mood... Crossed the bridge with still a good meter before she could start flooding the place...

Then the rain stopped...

This typhoon/storm is a real tricky bastard. You feel confident because there is no wind and little rain, then suddenly the shit hit the fan....

The office sent us home this afternoon and told us to work remotely. There are some nasty looking clouds hovering over Tokyo right now but so far not much happening. At least not on my side of town.

One thing you will soon learn is that while the media and the internet goes into a panic about what will (or might) happen in the major population centres, that very rarely means that the Japan Sea coast will get the same as the Pacific coast. It is a whole 'nother world, baby! And by the same token, events that can have quite major effects on the Japan Sea coast will often be completely ignored by the media and the internet.

This is not always a bad thing. it can be good for the soul to watch these things with some detachment.

In other words, I don't think you'll be getting any of that shit.

Indeed...if I'm not too exhausted, I might make another trip out. I think we have the actual build site cleared (though plenty of land that still needs clearing) but there are soooo many small trees!! (stumps to remove now) I was looking at renting a wood chipper but now I'm wondering if a bonfire might be better haha

I hope that your low personal luck quotient does not mean that you are terminally unlucky.

I think we should check that yanpa's account hasn't been compromised: at first I thought that the comment was uncannily Colignifique.

Unfortunately I have used up my quote of emoticons for the month, so you will have to speculate as to the proximity of my tongue to either facial cheek.

Back on topics, lashings of atsui blanketing the greater Kanto area.

According to AccuWeather it is currently 31°C here in southern Miyagi.

Doesn't feel like it though. In my office/studio on the second floor it is right around 25° with just the dehumidifier running.

Either that or the radiation has taken out my nervous system and I simply have no feeling.

No problem ... I'm cool. And the rain seems to have stopped. At last.

Yeah, probably. And then maybe it'll just sort of dissipate before it gets here. I sure hope so.

I can handle heat as long as it's dry, and I can handle cold, but I HATE humidity, which is why I have no plans to move any further south (unless it's to the southern hemisphere).

Nature did take care of that. Darwin sent your candidates.

Two more deaths were reported Thursday on Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture, which the typhoon had already passed but where maritime conditions remained rough.

Local police said three men who had gone to the beach for a swim were swept away around 11:30 a.m. Two died, but one was rescued.

From Typhoon leaves seven dead as it heads toward Tokyo

Sad, but the other deaths appear to have been less predictable than the tourists here (the article did not specify tourists, but the local news down south did).

The latest study shows that in chimpanzee, which is closely related to human, genes play a far more important role than the environment.

Weird, Halong seems nowhere near this position and is still a tropical storm having to spool up. In no way get too complacent.
It is still much lower at 15N 141S (at least this afternoon, can't be much farther by now)
