Tohokudai evicts students for being students

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Thu Jul 31, 2014 1:39 pm

Great headline :???:

Japan evicts over 100 students for breaching no-drinking rules

A Japanese university has taken the step of evicting all 105 residents of a school dormitory for breaching its no-drinking rule, according to media reports.

Peeved officials at Tohoku University banned drinking in the dorm earlier this year, but their patience finally ran out after failing in their attempts to curtail rowdy behaviour, including cases of students vomiting out of windows, the Japan Times said on Tuesday.

First and second-year students—who comprise around 70 percent of the dorm at the university in the tsunami-hit northeast of the country—are below the legal drinking age of 20.

Vomiting out of windows, eh? Surely the correct behaviour is to throw up over yourself while lying on a station platform.

That kind of behaviour results in misshapen platform pizzas. It is to be discouraged.

On a different note, how long is it until the directive to add "tsunami" or "earthquake" or "nuclear" to any mention of Tohoku no matter how unrelated, runs out? I seem to have misplaced my copy of the memo, and I was feeling that it was around about now....

The discovery of large amounts of empty beer cans tipped off college staff

Surely this is a lie.

Now, if it had been happoshu.....

I was going to channel Russell channelling the comment moderators and say that the journos are just doing their job, but one of the comments alerted me to their ground breaking 28 July article scooping the 30 July one SJ posted.
Tohoku University evicts entire dormitory for rampant drinking

On July 15, Tohoku University sent eviction notices to all 105 residents of Meizenryo, a student-governed dormitory in Sendai. The school claims that the students violated their “promise to abstain from alcohol.”

They probably had to post the 30 July article because the 28 July one failed go use any of the triple-tragedy keywords.

Reading the comments from people on the ground in the two articles, it seems that this might be beyond just student drinking and a bit more into the "frat house" image with a bit of alcohol involved hazing thrown in, and the university wants to break the cycle and stop that culture. And just maybe wants a window to convert the toilets to western style and upgrade the building a bit. :cool2:

Don't forget that the legal drinking age is 20, so quite a few of the students (if not most) would have been underage.

That would put the university in a bit of a spot.

------
Not directly related, but: It is a gorgeous campus, as Japanese universities go.
Lots of international students too (Ah-ha! There's the problem!).

Like age checks are ever done... that and they can always get the older guys/gals to buy and they can pocket some money too. not that hard to get booze.

I think you're missing the point.

Sure, they can get booze easy enough, but it's pretty easy to figure out that a bunch of underage students are puking out the windows, and that's a problem for the university to which their education and welfare has been entrusted. Drinking below the age of 20 is illegal, and if that sort of thing is going on in the university dorms ... guess who's going to have to take responsibility.

True....18, 19yo's are still considered "minors" in Japan  the university has to play tough love parent or risk being fucked....though with the popularity of dorms for adults here, I wonder when/if individual responsibility comes into play.

They can always give the excuse that it's because of the tap water...

Yes, I'm sure US universities would be far more forgiving of this kind of behavior in their dormitories.

Point is if an 18, 19yo is arrested for underage drinking in Japan, they aren't going to be held responsible. If that happebed in, say, California...they will be personally responsible as an adult. Possibly the alcohol retailer as well. Not that it stops them from drinking but it does mean it stays more low key.

You're barely making more sense than Coligny.

Besides, which is crazier: not letting adults drink and letting minors join the military like the US or not considering people adults till they're 20?

My theory is that he has the fartbag on ignore, and didn't check the post which sparked yours.

Having people on ignore can lead to a few WTF conversations. it is just a matter of balance, and the rule of thumb is to ask whether the conversations are more WTF when you see what they write than when you don't.

I used to think that was crazy but then if you look at enforcement of it, it pretty much encourages retailers to take responsibility regarding who they sell to (and manufacturers who they market to) and those who are going to drink regardless, to keep out of trouble while doing so.
