Lens and lighting/flash quality are pretty important for portrait photography as well as sensor capacity. All depends on the photo booth and studio I suppose. I have used photobooth pictures for some things but for passports and such I usually spend a bit more. Also, the "studio" I used give you the file on CD so you can always print your own pictures later - either on their machine or your own.

My current passport (2011, processed in Hong Kong) is graced with the output from the automatic photobooth in Takadanobaba station.

I had trouble in the past, I think they were more sensible in HK. I checked at our local studio and the Brit specs don't match their ID photo specs. So it would end up a hassle . I think my camera skills and photoshop ability might pass muster, but printing would be an issue. The conveni machine might do the job at a pinch.

I'm in Durham right now and did think of going to join the picket line outside the passport office.

Received an email from the passport office asking if I had sent the new photos yet, had to tell them that since they still had a backlog and were on strike I didn't see the point in hurrying.

My daughter says she wants to live in the UK because it doesn't have earthquakes, guess that means I should persevere with the passport application, hopefully it will come through before the big one hits Tokyo.

So, I read many times that an extension was available for UK passports. Mine has expired so I'm planning to get an extension, renew passport when in Blighty..... or so I thought.

https://www.gov.uk/get-an-emergency-pas ... l-document

You can no longer get a 12-month extension on an existing passport. If you already have an appointment at a British embassy, consulate or high commission, you will still be able to attend.

Bastards have stopped fucking issuing extensions. What a bunch of shits. So now what, send by snail mail and get one in time for Christmas? Bollocks..

Edit: called the Embassy, they will still honour the extension offer until 24th of April. Must have had complaints from pissed off Brits.

Edit #2: Called again to make an appointment, this time given the finger. No more extensions are being issued. British service at it's best.
I was informed the UK passport renewal system is working more efficiently now........ we will see.....

Did you think the Embassy would sully itself dealing with the riff raff? The gate to the gated community is closed fast.

A particular flaw in my character I must confess, one of many some would say, is expecting people to do exactly what they promise.

It appears this extension offer was withdrawn 3 days ago, with no notice whatsoever, something which seems to be perfectly acceptable to the supreme beings behind the aforementioned gate. So having already discontinued any kind of passport renewal assistance in Tokyo, the only option available other than snail mail UK renewal, is emergency travel documentation, for which one would be relieved a total of 95 beer tokens. I suppose they must pay for the embassy swimming pool somehow.....

Never mind Japan.......................Great Britain is sinking...................... :cry2:

As a committed fan and appreciator of the level of service and efficiency I received from the public serviles whilst dominatrixed in the UK (Pictland), I say it's time for the peasants to be revolting again. How do enough of us manage to convince ourselves that voting for our respective corporate welfare parties is a good idea?

I can't even vote there any more...

Anyway, passports, pffft. What's wrong with entering on the underside of a lorry via Calais, I ask?

Vote? Why would you want to, have you seen the performing monkeys standing in the election this year?

Passport is in the air now, what's the FG estimate on delivery... 1 month, 2 months? Ready for the next millennium?

On a lighter note, I explained this to a J female acquaintance yesterday, she informed me that I could simply go to the next town where there is a passport office. When I questioned this explaining that as an FG I have to follow some procedures, she said "It's ok, your wife is Japanese, so you can get a passport at the J office."

Dumber than most.....

I did my daughter's last October. It took a bit under 3 weeks from despatch to receipt. They use DHL rather than the post.

Yes, but much, much sweeter than most. I love the way the rather countrified kids have accepted Us. That is actually Kokoro Nuku Nuku stuff right there man. Do the reverse artihmetic, subtract any sort of knowledge of how the non-Jpn world works, and you end up with decency +12. Shame she wasn't a looker, eh? :-D

Really, really well put. That's exactly what I thought when I saw the post and exactly why I decided to move here. That accepted Us thing you get from the countrified folk and the reverse arithmetic. So true.

Yes, credit where credit's due, she may not be miss Japan, or the sharpest tool in the shed, but she genuinely believes what she said. And again to her credit, she has experience helping another FG with legal assistance when he ended up incarcerated on the top floor of Tokyo immigration.
However is she was an FG, she would most certainly be blonde.....

Hee Hee. Snarkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

Glad to hear somebody else got what I got from that. The We Japakneez stuff is tiresome enough that the unwitting or unwitted acceptance should be enjoyed whenever possible. I wonder if Chibaka's Blondie wasn't doing a reverse assumption based on the equally endearing silly idea that marrying a foreigner would make Her a foreigner too. And I think we all know how shockingly unwelcoming our Immigrant Nations have become to a foreign spouse. I have never been anywhere that has such unproblematic immigration procedures as Japan when properly sponsored or attached. The most time I have ever spent in Japanese Immigration aside from lining up was when I unwittingly overstayed 2 days: a 5 minute lecture, 5 minutes of paperwork backdating, 10 minutes penalty wait back at the seats, and in the end they just extended my WHV another 6 months to make it all legal. At home I would have been in lockup, and I could have easily read Moby Dick while waiting in the Vancouver office with my ex.

At least banks are supposed to make profits

At the same time, managers at the passport agency, which made a £42 million profit during the chaos, received up to £3,500 in bonuses.

Well, some unexpected and pleasing news... After the disappointment of the British Embassy dropping their extension service with no notice, I had to go the snail mail renewal route. Must be some kind of record, I sent my passport on the 13th, today I am in possession of a shiny new one after just 13 days (too many 13's there me thinks). So, kudos to the passport office in Liverpool, and to whoever kicked arse after the previous fiasco.
