I was stuck with a dying battery in my iBook during my trip (it wouldn't hold a charge for more than 15-20 minutes) and had to pick up a replacement. The smaller Apple shops in Akihabara didn't keep them in stock. (Don't know about Laox Mac-kan, I never saw it.) My bacon was thoroughly saved by the Bic Camera near Tokyo Station. They've got a huge mac section, with all kinds of support parts and accessories a lot of the smaller shops don't carry.

There's also an underground basement in Akihabara on the Club-SEGA side of the road on the right hand side of the bridge (I think). Enter the door on the right (next to where there are plenty of calculators being sold on the side of the street.)

Downstairs you'll find plenty of old refurbished Macs and obsolete parts and stuff if you happen to be taking care of a vintage mac.

Laox also has an ongaku-kan, which carries guitars, DJ equipment, speakers, amps, etc., etc. If you can't read Japanese, just click the link and look to the left on the map. The ongaku-kan is the one with a guitar on it.

(Wired story)

From the Wired link:
The manager, Masanori Uchikawa, said more than 500 customers visit the store on weekdays, and between 700 and 1,000 on weekends.

"This is the only store in Japan that can have the Apple logo displayed on the front," Uchikawa said through an interpreter.

Asked if he feared Apple would encroach on his turf by opening an Apple store in Japan, he shook his head.

"We would beat them if they opened a store here," he said, laughing.

I don't doubt it. I'll have to check out Laox next time I'm in town.
