Must choose between two jobs- advice please

Postby pragmatic » Thu Aug 07, 2014 11:27 pm

I have to choose between two jobs. One job is up near Tokyo (it is in Chiba to be exact). It is at an eikaiwa. It pays 250,000 yen per month+ 100,000 yen bonus. However, I do not know anyone here, I feel lonely.

The other job is in South Osaka It pays 200,000 yen per month (no cut backs for December or summer break.)
I have a lot of friends in Osaka and I would feel better there.

I guess I have to choose between the money or my friends.

There are people here who have lot of experience in this area and your opinion means a lot to me. I would be grateful for any advice you have on this matter.

Thank you very much

I would take it up with your local religious leader.

They tend to be experts in guiding people to make choices...

Money is better than sex. I'd go for it. But then Osaka is better than Tokyo; I'd go there.

On a lighter note; if I were you, I would look 5 to ten years into the future. Where/what would you like to be doing in 2020? Whichever job you anticipate to get you closer to your goal could be a good start.

My personal feeling is that you bring up the issue of loneliness more than other people, that this seems to be an important factor for you. That might lead you to your answer.

Generally speaking, if you have doubts about an activity or relationship before you even enter into it, those doubts rarely disappear, they are more likely to grow (partly through confirmation bias: you tend to search for reasons to doubt if you start with that attitude). That may also lead you to your answer.

I hope to God that they lead you to the same answer, because otherwise you are stuffed.

You might be able to pick up some extra work in Osaka to make up for the shortfall.

Chiba is pretty cheap to live in though.

If you don't make friends easily then go with your social group otherwise you will be farked.

Osaka generally sucks for finding extra work (at least something that pays more than 1,500 yen per hour).

If you learn enough Japanese to get away from teaching, it still sucks because there are few non-teaching jobs for foreigners here (well, at least ones that won't make you go back to teaching).

Hell I hear Sukiya is hiring foreigners (or anyone with a heartbeat) now.

How do you plan to live of 20 man a month in Osaka? I know I couldn't. It sounds like the friends you have in Osaka are going to have to help subsidize you.

Remember that rent is a lot lower in the Chibas of Osaka than the Chiba of Tokyo.
