It's not a serious expression and is generally used as a joke, dumbass. It's funny that you have so much trouble with a pidgin since they are know to be very easy languages to master.

Aww you wuz making a jokez...
Then it's ok you funny guy...
Just for info, it's considered a joke in which ken and during which season/timespan ? Because as usual, I suppose that if it's a joke north it certainly is an insult to someone's mother in the south while being a ingredient for cooking elsewhere...
And while I don't mind insulting someone's mom, fucking up a recipe by accident is downright tragic...

I wasn't making a joke, dumbass. I was putting it in terms Takechan would easily understand.

Then try the universal language...

wagyl wrote:And therein lies the rub of the issue: I think a lot of these "I can't make friends in Japan" people don't have extended social circles (which is a bit of a chicken and egg thing, I know...) If you have a few hobbies outside of work and drinking with workmates and cussing people out on the internet, you are forced into interaction with other people and every now and then you find cool people. Say, for example, you took up messing around with radio controlled models. Meet enough other enthusiasts and you will find people you want to hang out with and communicate with, and it will extend your language too. It sounds flippant to say it, but some people really need to get a life, meaning a full, rich participatory life with hobbies and interactions.

Bingo! Having interests and hobbies and/or being involved in the community are keys to building friendships. My Japanese language skills are average at best and my grammar is horrid but I would say that almost all my friends are Japanese and and few of them speak English well or better than my Japanese. Community involvement in Japan is huge. And if you do things for the community you find that people no longer call you gaijin and you will develop friendships. As a corollary to that, I think that living in an apartment building and/or a megapolis like Tokyo does make friendships much more difficult because everyone tends to be a transient and have little or no sense of community.

Over the years I've had buddies from all over the place, some are still here, some are dead, some left, some moved elsewhere in Japan. Never really sliced and diced them according to nationality, more according to are they drinking buddies or not. I even like some of the guys I work with tho' I do try to keep work and social life apart.

That last bit might be the issue, I think we tend not to hang out with people from work too much cos the conversation can be kind of limited.

I think it's largely a reaction to the Japanese also splitting the world into gaijin and locals and it seems to be pretty common for expats anywhere you go. Plus, being a gaijin in Japan gives you something in common with other non-Japanese people no matter where they come from. Another great reason to learn Japanese is that it's the lingua franca of the non-Western gaijin community. Some of the closest friends I've made here were other foreigners who didn't speak Japanese English. It's definitely made my time here a lot more interesting and been a great way to find out where the best (insert country name here) food is.

That might be awesome to witness... Because even just english, between two foreigners from different non english speaking countries is already a total farce. Every country try to mitigate / adapt their pronunciation and accent to try to sound english, and there's compatibility issues... Hell even between two French it's sometimes a circus, got friend with Tunisian parents, native French speaker... But holy fuck, his english accent was absolutely hillarious, like a living parody of the love child between Yasser Arafat and Saddam Hussein...

With japanese it might go through the roof...

My first few years here I hung out with some Iranian guys that lived in the same town as me. In the summer we used to get together in front of the station after work a couple of times a week to have a few cold beers outside while we shot the shit. We often got funny looks from the locals and one time a girl was staring at us wide eyed and jaw on the floor so asked what was wrong. She asked me, "Why are you guys speaking Japanese to each other?" When I explained to her that it was our common languages since I didn't speak Farsi and they didn't speak English it was almost too much for her to handle. She ended up becoming one of our friends and sometimes joined us for those after work beers.

It was a tough call deciding whether to take a shot at you and the French or point out the irony of a guy assuming you're an Anglophone while accusing you of chauvinism.

I did which was the deciding factor but considering the intended audience comments in Japanese aren't really relevant.

Do I detect another excuse for not learning Japanese? Shiyat, even g-translate is just a few key strokes/スマホ touches away...

Cool thing about not being born here is that I get to defend the Japanese as an uber-Japanese.

I mean, as if if Takechan even matters. Anyone remember that lame ass McTojo? Too short lived, too short-sighted, too limited. Really a C- troll that old fellow.

Conversely, I know a Japanese gal who spent her high school years in S Africa.

As a result she speaks English with an Afrikaans accent that would do the Springboks proud. It's delightful.
