The best thing is when you go home for a trip and people want to take you to their favorite sushi place because you live in Japan. I love sushi but I can't handle the sushi obsession people have outside of Japan. I don't get it either. Why is that the one food that gives everyone and their mother a hard on?

that is a good question... not that good really. I mean, I don't particularly like it, but there are rare times when I could grub out on it.

Mind you, lots of Japanese friends in Kyoto use any visit there as an excuse to go for Western Food, noting that I must be craving it having been back in Japan for a full 72 hours by then.

Another pet peeve is full Vancouverite / West Coast types that should know better and still refer to Sushi generically as Japanese Food. Because they don't actually eat or even like any other kind of same. When I hear Japanese Food, I imagine several varieties of genuinely delicious variously cooked YumYums. When I hear Sooshee, my heart sinks slightly but I go along for the social thing. To me it's like Bait and Switch marketing. I seem to like it more than IPU, and certainly than SushiHater JAFO, but damn, unless you pay real money it isn't just not that good, it's kinda gross. Full Vancouver $8 for 40 piece Sushi is really rather revolting.

preach on, and it's not even the raw fish or raw anything for that matter I like my steaks blue and fresh salmon is pretty damn good. The vinegar they put into the rice makes me gag.
