Badge of Honor

Postby Russell » Mon Sep 15, 2014 2:14 pm

Most Japanese men clueless about pregnancy badges

Nearly 60 percent of Japanese men have never heard about the badges pregnant women sometimes wear in public to get seats on public transportation, a government survey has revealed.

[...]

According to the survey, 63.8 percent of women and 41.4 percent of men knew that the illustration of a pregnant woman with a baby was a pregnancy badge. Expectant mothers sometimes put them on in public, such as when riding a train, to inform others of their condition.

Among men and women 60 or older, less than half knew about the badges.

More

I must admit, I'm just as clueless as Japanese men in this department.

How does a pregnancy badge look like?

I always thought it was an enlarged belly, but maybe I need to be reeducated...

I think it's mainly for women who aren't showing yet.

I've not seen that version before.
They are called マタニティマーク
In Tokyo, the symbol is similar to this:

But with variations as badges are issued by different train companies, airlines, city halls, or from baby-related companies. It's sometimes part of courtesy seat signs too. Bizarrely I've heard of some women hide them away during peak travel so people don't feel obligated to give up their seats or abuse them for expecting it. So probably similar those irritating "baby on board" car stickers and a bit look at me. Though could help those worrying about offering a seat to someone who turns out just to be a fatty.

IF they aint showin... then they dont need no fucking priority seat. My baby mamma was working the restaurant until she was 6 and a half months, hers sister and mother as well.

Despite being pregnant, exercise is good in moderation and standing and walking regularly also helps the baby. Sitting on your ass all day, eating, and watching TV aint good... neither is dieting to stay skinny after your pregger period O_o

Depends on the mother and the situation. And any mother with children (visible or not) has more right to a seat than Cunty McSalarydrone or Taro Twatstudent.

Hey now... our Taro for sure deserves it!

but with all the old fogies, preggers will be out prioritized for years to come and I rarely ever see someone in their late 50's/early 60's stand up for a preggers.

I know I've said it here before but the reason I don't unless someone is right in front of me and really look like they're struggling is that the people you give up your seats to in Japan usually turn it into a song and dance of repeated refusals and "sumimasens" which makes me uncomfortable. When I do give up my seat these days I just get up like I'm going to get off and hope the right person gets to sit which they usually do.

Yeah, that's the one. I just took the first image that came up in a Google search and went with it.

I've never seen one of those, although I have seen that symbol before. Actually, it kind of reminds me of a subway poster in Osaka - they had some mom pushing a stroller into the train (as in the doors were closed).

I give up my seat to people who are clearly in need; I sure as hell don't give up my seat for the old folks who run on to find a seat.

I fucked up my knee last year and had it in a brace for 3 weeks or so - at the beginning, I could barely walk (fortunately it happened on the way to work so I could get rosai hoken for 1 week) but nobody gave up their seats and it was clear I could barely walk. I did tell off a few assholes on the train who were making comments though.

The maternity mark seems to be spreading. Transport for London make them too - certainly more chance in London of mistakenly of thinking a chubby-lala is actually pregnant.

They even gave one to that regular user of the tube, Kate Middleton. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/ka ... rd-1774768
