Hey, I know that "Pet Store from Hell" I believe it's been there forever---I've driven past many times over the past 10+ years. In the summer, the poor beasts just fry in the sun in their stinking cages, which I could smell from my car with the windows rolled up!

Stricter standard eyed on animal rights

TOKYO — The Environment Ministry has decided to introduce a new standard on caring for animals at zoos and pet shops next spring. The stricter standard, to be mandated under the animal protection law, is aimed at reducing the stress on animals, which often live in unnatural environments and under the glare of the public for long periods of time.

Zoos and pet shops will be required to provide environments for animals that are secure, healthy and promote natural behavior, and pet shops will also be required to set time restrictions on how long animals can be viewed and to allow young animals to be raised by their parents for as long as necessary.

When I was living in Hirosaki City in Aomori Prefecture a kind of mobile zoo came to town. They filled Hirosaki Park with animals in tiny cages. The lion was in a tiny cage with nowhere to clean itself. It was very sad to see a great beast like that reduced to a lifeless filthy creature. There wasn't even room for the lion to walk around. It was disgusting. Like I said before I'm not a big animal rights guy but I know the difference between right and wrong.
