Sex Change is Wasei Eigo??

I learnt something today. I'm still not sure if it is that "sex change" is wasei eigo, or it is that Asahi Shimbun do no research.

Apparently, as part of learning about gender awareness, a Yamanashi High School allowed students to voluntarily change uniforms with each other. I'm not sure how much you will learn by cross dressing, apart from broadening your horizons perhaps, but it gave the media an opportunity to take photographic evidence and prevent careers in politics for all the students.

　「男らしさ」「女らしさ」を離れて自分や社会を見つめ直してみようと、山梨県富士吉田市の県立富士北稜高校で１１日、有志生徒が男女で制服を交換して過ごす催しがあった。「セクスチェンジ・デー」と呼ぶ試みで、「ｓｅｘ（性）」と「ｅｘｃｈａｎｇｅ（交換）」の造語だ。全校の約４割に当たる２９９人（男子１１７人、女子１８２人）が参加した。

I'm not entirely sure you can swap uniforms if there are not an even number of boys and girls involved, but anyway, I hope everyone had fun.

It brought a tear to my eye how they managed to take a reasonably important social issue and both trivialise and completely divert the issue away from its more common mainstream focus, which to my mind anyways, is issues of gender confusion or wtf we are being told to call it by the finger waggers.

Then again, at least they aren't pandering to the 0.04% and their loudmouth touts like in Vancouver:

Huang Xiaofeng, Li Yuen Ching and Liu Shaohuifiled the petition seeking to overturn the VSB’s new policy.

Obviously hoping to assimilate smoothly into Canadian society, the plaintiffs complained that the revised policy is racist because it doesn't accommodate Chinese Cultural Values...............


Though having said that, I think it's nice that the VSB is trying to address the issue; I just wish they would do it without all the huggy Oprah splash and flash. All they needed to do was to direct any interested children to use the handicapped can.

It is only guesswork on my part but I doubt that this was about gender confusion. I think it was probably more about "a gentleman does not walk down the same side of the street after a lone lady at night, but instead discretely crosses to the other side of the road to assure her that he is not following after her" with a bit of "see how easy an upskirt shot is, lads!!!???" Oh, and a bit of "gurrls can do anything" with a wagging index finger and a sassy sway of the neck.

Oh, very muchly. It seems to be explicitly about gender sensitivity rather than sensitivity to nuances of gender, which only makes the slogan even more ridiculous. Why not just be honest and call it Cosplay? It is so delightfully ham handed I couldn't help but laugh in affectionate derision. I actually think it is a nice effort, though.
