Japan's obsession with gran

Postby yanpa » Wed Nov 19, 2014 1:52 pm

Presumably this is all marketing directed towards the growing segment of older dames with disposable income?

Not sure I want to know what kind of blue fantasies anyone's gran would be involved in...

The Gran were sentient mammalian humanoids native to the planet Kinyen, though they had colonies across the galaxy, including settlements on the planets Hok and Malastare.

Fascinating... this relatively common term in the homeland of the English language is not in use in the colonies?

Just did an image search for sybian...

Google: everything from Mitsubishi lancer evolution 9, mobile phones, power drills to aircraft carriers. It's like they only answer with stuff i usually search for, no matter what the new query is. The only 2 stuff missing to validate this theory were Al Hussein Scud and Topol M launchers...

Bing: several pages of sluts riding sit on dildos in various stage of orgasm and states of undress...

It is only rejected by the rebellious colonies. At least some of the loyal colonies recognise it.

Does the grandmother definition relate to the videogame(?) and beer in the first post better than a race from Star Wars?

I've seen "GRAND" being shorted to グラン before so maybe Grand Blue Fantasy and Grand Rye? Wasei Engrish? Like I said...I'm confused....

It's either グラン being incorrectly rendered back into romaji, or from the Italian/Spanish (as in "Gran Turismo"). Either way it looks stupid in combination with English words... I mean "Gran Class" in the Tohoku Shinkansen? Are they offering bingo as part of the on-board service? Complimentary zimmer frames?

Disclaimer: if your local dialect of English does not parse "Gran" as meaning "little old grandmother" then you might as well ignore this thread.

Ahh OK I see what you are confused about.

You have fallen into the trap of thinking that Gaikoku is monolithic.

I used to live not too far from the condiment strewn manshon, in a building called Gran Pare.
Most people would recognise it better if I called it Grand Palais.

It was false advertising.

By the way, Gran Dry is not beer.

Well, they're using kata-romaji-kaigai words from two different languages, written in non-romaji romaji?

It seems as of late, 味 is being routed in favor of フレーバー  I'm all for adopting foreign words they don't have words for but it's getting to the point where they have to stay tuned to TV every day to understand the latest kataka foreign words that are trending.

We have been invited to an evening at the Smiths', and a soiree at the Joneses'. Which shall we go to?

I never know whether to choose a cafe, or just go to a coffee shop.

Or another example: it is not a kidnapping, it is a rendition.

We've had these conversations before. Every linguistic crime the Japanese are accused of, English has already done it.

Looking across various threads, it looks like a low pressure system has sucked the abstract word-play capacity from certain localised areas. I smirked. Not a LOL mind you.

You're missing the third language and the mystery language(s) that it's written in. GRANBLUE? Not Romaji, not English, WTF is it? "Dry" seems like English but "Gran" surely isn't...and yet neither are Romaji? I mean, café..ok, so it's French....but it doesn't become kahfay (unless you're in Boston) nor does it get combined with some color to make "cafebraun" and get used in media.

I mean, I get your point, this shit happens in all languages, totally agree, point taken...but here it seems to go a step further without any reason other than wanting to look cool/trendy/whatever and totally failing. How many times have you seen a missing image on a Japanese website that says "Now Printing" ...even most Japanese can't explain that one. I'm still waiting to see what happens to the movie catch all "ディブイディ" as more 4K TV's roll out. (if you've ever watched a DVD on a 4K TV you know what I mean) Then again, they still refer to the good ol "ブイティアール" when video tapes have been out of the mainstream for how long?

Ford Gran Torino.

And this coming from a person from a culture where entree is the main dish. Explain that! Every American I have asked has failed to do so.

Yeah, it's as dumb "GRANBLUE" but we're talkin' 1972....and still not as brain dead bad as GM trying to sell the Nova in Spanish speaking markets.

Wikipedia says my cultural usage is legit:

" In North American English, the term retains an older meaning describing a heavy, meat course, due to the disappearance in the early 20th century of a large communal main course such as a roast as a standard part of the meal in the English-speaking world. This use of the term is unusual (but not unheard of) outside North America, as most other English speakers follow contemporary French usage, generally considering the word "entrée" to mean a first course."

Cool! I learnt something new: like so many of those other things the British English world complains about the way Americans mangle it, this is another one where you appear to actually be more conservative.

One last example, since 1972 was apparently not acceptable: Vente at Starbucks. Nobody knows what that is without asking, because it is totally made up. What the fuck is it with these English speaking companies?
I'm reminded of pictures I have seen around the place of the self service coffee machines in 7-11 with hand written 小 next to the "Regular" button and hand written 大 next to the "Large" button.

I think there are many words like that in NA English but when it comes to spelling, Brit English speakers have a case.

Venti - Italian for 20...like the 20 ounces in the drink. Legit BUT I agree it's the same WTF mentality as Japan since I'm sure the majority of the customers don't know that and it seems way out of place with the other sizes. Canada uses piccolo, mezzo, grande, venti...

Hahaha, and you make a good point regarding the legit use of English that tends to leave enough Japanese scratching their heads as to require subtitles. Don't get me started on Japanese websites...by far the worst when it comes to that...and most don't have subs.

The Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year is… vape

Image

http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2014 ... year-vape/

The shortlist

Here are the words that came close, but didn’t quite make it as Word of the Year:

bae n. used as a term of endearment for one’s romantic partner.

budtender n. a person whose job is to serve customers in a cannabis dispensary or shop.

contactless adj. relating to or involving technologies that allow a smart card, mobile phone, etc. to contact wirelessly to an electronic reader, typically in order to make a payment.

indyref, n. an abbreviation of ‘independence referendum’, in reference to the referendum on Scottish independence, held in Scotland on 18 September 2014, in which voters were asked to answer yes or no to the question ‘Should Scotland be an independent country?’

normcore n. a trend in which ordinary, unfashionable clothing is worn as a deliberate fashion statement.

slacktivism, n., informal actions performed via the Internet in support of a political or social cause but regarded as requiring little time or involvement, e.g. signing an online petition or joining a campaign group on a social media website; a blend of slacker and activism.

Is it wrong that I want to bitchslap any lemur that calls me "bae?"
