He was a former competitive power lifter who used to be really jacked. He said that he got into weight lifting hoping to impress the ladies but he only ever got attention from guys who wanted to see his biceps or know how much he could bench so after awhile he decided to give it up.

It is not really here or there, but do you get the impression that his pick up artistry would actually work? Would it reel in a chick? A chick worth reeling in?(although that might not be a concern for him: anything with the right equipment seems to be fair game)

The point of these types of seminars is how to get laid not how to find your soul mate.

I know some guys who've used tactics they learned from pick up artists' books and it's worked for them. These "gurus" teach things that a lot of us learned by our early 20s through trial and error: don't kiss women's asses, don't spend lots of money wining and dining hoping to get laid, don't be too available, don't be afraid to walk away, do be assertive, do look the part, and do hit on women constantly. The differences I've seen in the advice dispensed is the level of contempt for women on display and how much they get into psychological games. I've never read one of these books but when I've seen these guys on TV and have been told what advice is in the books by my friends' and I've always though, "Duh. Somebody had to tell you that?"

I think there are two main reasons the advice seems to work. One is a numbers game. If you're constantly on the hunt, you're going to get lucky sometimes. Even if your success rate is pretty low you'll start to rack up some numbers. The second more important reason is that it helps guys develop a higher level of confidence and women respond to confidence better than anything else. Besides, no matter how much women or the PC police want to deny it, a lot of women also respond well to assholes. Especially the types that hang out in bars and night clubs waiting to get picked up.

Like I said before, I have no problem with the idea of pick up gurus. If they can help guys get laid who couldn't do so otherwise, great. Even if the advice they dispense amounts to playing games and psychological manipulation. I think all of us do that when we're trying to pull, it's just that some people do it naturally and others have to train themselves. Where Blanc crossed the line was the physical stuff which is why it's caused this kind of reaction.

Kyoto is or was absolutely full to the rafters with this ilk of Super Eikaiwa Men (much more so than any other large Japanese city I have ever spent time in), and Vancouver definitely has no shortage of them since half of Canada decided to move there. At the level of gross generalisation, they are people neither bright enough nor well raised enough to understand that just because they want something or want to do something doesn't mean it's alright to do whatever the fuck you want to achieve it, and excusing it as a joke gone wrong just makes them look even stupider and nastier. And like a true Charisma Man, they often seem lacking in real confidence and a sense of self worth. In case it needs to be mentioned, the vast majority of the Kyoto ones are antipodeans, so it could be a problem of incommensurate comparison.

I am socially awkward enough and unlucky with women often enough that I can sympathise with any fellow traveller, but A-Holery is not the solution, and Women are not the problem, though I do wonder if overindulgent single mothering might not contribute to this rising resentment and outright hatred of women, a la Norman Bates. I guess the physical stuff bothers me the most because I don't like it either. But when one of them tries to make me shake his hand or puts his arm around my shoulder it really fucking annoys me. I really don't like having my personal space violated and I don't like seeing it done to others.

I totally agree. Crap written on the internet is as you say, and regardless of what the Internet Gendarmerie claim, it's effectively harmless unless you're such a wuss you shouldn't be on the internet at all. In an ideal world all that sort of stuff you mentioned sounds and looks hilarious. That's why we enjoy that shiite in movies.
