Beware of Japan’s “Black Widows”

Postby Mike Oxlong » Thu Nov 20, 2014 9:53 pm

How many husband-murdering, inheritance collecting “poison ladies” are out there in
Japan? The trend seems to be growing. But the police don’t keep very close track.

On November 19, the Kyoto Police arrested a wealthy 67-year-old widow on suspicion of poisoning her 75-year-old husband with cyanide—and investigators suspect she may have murdered five other former partners. Thursday morning, while raiding her second home, the police discovered empty medicine capsules they believe she may have used in the alleged crime.

In other countries, black widow murders are a sensation. In Japan they’re becoming something of a tradition. The woman under investigation now is the latest in a line of what are called dokufu, poison ladies, who have a penchant for snuffing their partners to collect insurance money and inheritances.

In this case the alleged killer is named Chisake Kakehi. She has been under investigation since last year when her fourth husband, Isao Kakehi, became ill at home and then was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on December 28. They had been married for less than two months.

An autopsy found highly toxic cyanide levels in the blood of the not-so-dearly departed. But there was no rush to judgment. The police investigation has spanned nearly 11 months, and along the way investigators discovered that, dating back to 1994, many of the men in the widow Kakehi's life have passed away under suspicious circumstances: her first husband died at age 54; four other men who married her or had become well acquainted with her have died since.

In September of last year, her 75-year-old boyfriend suddenly became ill after the couple ate together at a restaurant, and he subsequently died. The next month she married the man who, it is safe to presume, was her final husband.

The Kyoto Police, now working jointly with the Osaka Police, also found traces of cyanide in the preserved blood samples of a 71-year-old man in Osaka Prefecture, who died in March 2012. Police allege the man was in a close relationship with Kakehi and they are investigating the details of his passing.

The cops say Kakehi gained several hundred million yen in inheritance from the deaths over the years.

Kakehi has been interviewed several times by the Japanese media since the police began the investigation last December. She has denied all charges saying, "How would I even get hold of cyanide? I have no idea."

Well to become a black widow you have be able to get away with it more than once. Given the lack of foresics, the disinterested police and insurance companies employees who don't get a shit, that really isn't a problem here. I don't get why it took them seven deaths to start making a conection.

1 is accident, 2 is coincidence, 3 is enemy action...

Reaching 7 you might have the work of a serial killer...

and over 600 would clearly be the work of an ancient Sumerian demon or some shit

Black widow not a financial expert

Chisako Kakehi, 67, who was arrested this week on suspicion of murdering her 75-year-old spouse, had received one billion yen in insurance and other payouts over ten years following the deaths of husbands and lovers, media said.

But the former bank worker, who held the money in more than 10 different accounts under several different names, had lost most of the cash in bad bets on futures markets, the Yomiuri newspaper reported.

In a case that has gripped Japan for days, the Asahi newspaper reported Kakehi had been involved with more than 10 men over the last two decades, of whom six had perished.

Most of the men had been found through marriage agencies, where she would look for partners who had land or property, but no children, the paper quoted investigation sources as saying.

Soon after Isao Kakehi—her fourth and most recent husband—died in December 2013, she was on the prowl for a new companion, it said.

She wanted the man to be “elderly” and “living alone,” the paper said, citing an investigator. She also made remarks suggesting that “it would be better if he has an illness”.

Kakehi—dubbed a “black widow” by some media for the female spider that eats its mate after coupling—has said she had serial relationships because she wanted peace of mind.

“I want to lead a peaceful life in my old age without scrambling for money but by relying on a decent man,” she told the private NTV network last month.

She inherited money from some of her unmarried partners as she had notary documents saying they would leave their money to her.

Giving her such documents was “the minimum, necessary way of expressing their sincerity”, she said.

Over the course of several doomed relationships, Kakehi had inherited hundreds of millions of yen in real estate, bank deposits and insurance money, Jiji Press said.

But she had racked up debts of 10 million yen by the time she married Isao Kakehi in November last year, Jiji Press said. He would be dead the following month.

The nuptials did not stop her courting other men, Jiji said, reporting that she had arranged a “marriage meeting” with an older man shortly after she took her vows.

The Nikkan Sports Daily said she was in relationships with several other men around the time of her fourth husband’s death.

She was registered at a number of marriage agencies in western Japan using different names and said she was looking for an “unattached elderly man with certain assets,” the paper reported.
