"... the occasion of the forthcoming list of New Year's honours to submit your name to the Queen with a recommendation that Her Majesty may be graciously pleased to approve that you be appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire."
Me? I thought, OBE me? Up yours, I thought. I get angry when I hear that word "empire"...What continues to be my biggest deal with the establishment must be my work with the British Council, of which, ironically, the Queen is patron....

Termed a 'born failure' by one teacher, Benjamin had a difficult school life, he later found out that he was dyslexic, and after being sent to an approved school he spent some time at Her Majesty's Pleasure.
Benjamin is actively involved in numerous organisations, including the Hackney Empire Theatre, Umoja Housing Co-op, the Are Dance Company, VIVA (Vegetarians International Voice for Animals), Newham Young People's Theatre Scheme, the Chinese Women's Refuge Group, Musicworks - Brixton, SARI (Soccer Against Racism in Ireland), and SHOP (Self-Help Organisation for ex-Prisoners). When asked how he finds the time for all this, he says, "I care about all these things passionately."
Fuck him, the Empire, His empire and his opinion.

This guy is a cheap publicity hound. He is using this as a way to forward his own soap box - whether his arguments have merit or not is not for me to say as I need to read more but I don't have the time at present, but going public like this before an event is just tacky.
Yeah, the guy is a hypocrite, or at least in self-denial. Like the bigot that drools, "I ain't a racist! I own at least one Jackson 5 eight-track". Or from Hamlet: "Methinks the lady doth protest too much".jez wrote:cstaylor wrote:"I am not one of those who are obsessed with their roots"![]()

Care to elaborate? Do you actually have anything interesting to say?
Me? I thought, OBE me? Up yours, I thought. I get angry when I hear that word "empire"]It is because of this idea of empire that black people like myself don't even know our true names or our true historical culture.[/b] I am not one of those who are obsessed with their roots, and I'm certainly not suffering from a crisis of identity

I was under the impression this board was open to various discussions, not just ones regarding Japan. Robert Frost, a poet of talent wrote:Fire and Ice

Is also great
And would suffice.

I'm not going to help you analyze one of the most famous works from one of the great American poets, but I would think a person who reads as much as you do could handle nine lines.
The difference between the great poets and slacker wannabes is subtlety. Does the reader really need everything spelled out for them?
cstaylor wrote:All I was saying is that the guy comes off as a hypocrite in the paragraph that I listed in my previous post. He rants about his genetic ancestors, then states (with a straight face?) that he's not obsessed with his roots.
I have no problem with activists, unless they put people's lives in danger. If he had left off the part about obsession, I would have refrained from posting, but that just irked me. Take a position, but don't waffle on it by turning truth on its head.
